Gramps really liked a rod he cast…and relative to that thread it got me thinking about this…
Is it valid to assume that because you really like the way a rod of a given brand, weight, and length casts… that you will like as well… other rods of that brand but different weights ???
I agree with the others and would add that even if they are similar throughout the line that you may not want that same quality in a rod of a different weight. I prefer 9’ 7&up wt rods to be stiff, 5wts to be med/stiff, short and light rods for small streams to be soft. I don’t think I would want the same feel for all places and conditions.
I built a pair of Sage RPL 9’ 2 piece fly rods, one a 3wt, one a 4 and the first thing I noticed was that I could cast the 3 further, so apparently mileage varies as they say.
I once bought a 6 wt. and loved the way it cast. Then I bought an 8 wt. of the same model. Thinking the rod would cast the same. I did’nt even cast it before I bought it. Wrong move! It cast like a 9 wt. that don’t need. I now consider it my 98 wt. and serves as a back up rod.
Well, ducky, nice question… really. I will answer it two ways. Yes… and no. There is a company which makes a 9ft. 6wt. we both fell in love with. The 9ft. 8wt. is not as ‘perfect’ feeling, but has the same ‘feel’ as the 6wt. Now, the company makes more than one ‘class’ of rods, made with different stuff. But, the ones, all of the ones, in the group we ‘fell in love with’, all felt the same. So, the answer to that one is, yes.
I think that, within the same group/class/bunch of rods by any maker, you can count on a certain feel running thru the whole line.
