saltwater rookie

My family and I are in the planning stages of our summer vacation. We will be going to Port Aransas, Tx and this time I’ll be taking my fly rod. (last year we went and I left it at home thinking I really wouldn’t have much time for fishing, I was wrong!!)

I’ve been a serious fisherman for at least 25 years and have been fly fishing for the last 3. In all that time I’ve only fished for freshwater fish.

Where can I go online to learn more about saltwater flyfishing? I plan on fishing the inland waterways and if I can afford a guide will hire one, but I really want to learn as much as I can before I go.

Thanks in advance!!!

Just an added note, I found the archives of the saltwater articles here at FAOL and that should keep me busy for a while.

I didn’t even know there was a saltwater section here. oops!!!

Hey Jargo,

I fish the Gulf Coast a lot and would recommend you bring two primary flies with you. A gold Dupre Spoon Fly for redfish and a chartreuse and white Clouser for everything else (primarily speckled trout). Quick strips on a floating line over grass flats and oyster bars. All that water can make it tough to know where to start so get a guide for a day if you can early in your trip, even for a half day. It will be invaluable in your saltwater education. Good luck!

I hope I don’t get crucified for saying this, but if you have spinning gear you may want to bring that as well. The first time I went fly fishing the salt, the conditions did not cooperate and I had a very difficult time. I would try it again, but just in case, I’ll bring a back-up outfit to chuck some hardware.

Thanks for the info!!

Hey jsalkas, I thought of taking my baitcaster and a crankbait, putting on my coveralls and a straw hat and walking down the breakline and asking the first guy I meet "Hey yall, are they bitin good?) just to see the looks I would get.
