Salt water fly types

Anybody want to venture a list of the top 3 or 4 flies for salt water? I fish in the Northeast (Jamaica Bay, NY) mostly. I’m interested in on-shore fishing.

I’d like to compile an up to date list by region. I don’t think there are as many out there as people think. Maybe I’m wrong but it would be nice to know.

Also, does anyone know about a fly for Stripers called a Grocery?

The grocery fly is a large deceiver type fly used in the Maine/N.H area. I believe it imitates a pollock.

My top four;

  1. deceiver
  2. snake fly
  3. flat wing
  4. blonde

I fish in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Cape Cod

Deciever and Clouser are the two most popular in my opinion. After that they seem to vary more depending on location. I’ve used both successfully from New England to the Carribean.

i’d have to say the rays fly rates pretty highly

I’m with Jed, clousers and decievers. There’s no baitfish hatch that i have not been able to match with a clouser or a deciever. Sometimes you may find them feeding in a crap hatch or a worm hatch, in that case keep a couple of those around. Also, when your in a bluefish frenzy, poppers and gurglers will do the trick.

Good Luck,

Chris

Ditto D. Micus.

Ray’s Fly is a great pattern.

I also tie a variation of the Ray’s that I call the Purple Haze. Instead of topping off with green I use purple.

It has been the go to fly this year for me.

I like Ray’s Fly, but I do not think it is one of the most popular. I use it alot, but I don’t hear of those outside of New England utilizing it as much.

As for the Purple Haze, I tie Ray’s fly as follows:

Wing: Sparse white bucktail twice as long as the hook.
Sparse yellow bucktail 2 1/2 times as long as the hook.
Two to four strands of silver or pearl flashabou.
Sparse olive bucktail 3 times the length of the hook.

Topping: 7 strands of peacock herl extending just beyond the wing.

Where is this green you talk about?? Do I use Yellow??

Jed,
Some people skip the fragile peacock herl and add a topping of plastic or bucktail.

jed, i think the green refers to olive.

Jed:

Dave is right. I was referring to olive. Just spaced a bit and was too lazy to edit the post when I noticed it.

I love a good bunker crease fly or an Enrico’s Mackerel or maybe even Dave Skok’s Harbor Pollack on a chilly November evening in NJ.

for me decievers, clousers and popper types
my fourth most used fly is probably a olive bunny strip that emulates a small eel

Duh… I did not see the olive/chartreuse/green/leafy color in my fly and I did not even read the cut and paste description.

I better go back to drinking rum as the halucinations are confusing the heck out of me.

jed

Jed,
Halucinations?
Maybe you should lay off of the purple haze

  1. Clousers
  2. Charlies and their many variations
  3. Seaducer
  4. Cockroach

In order:

Clouser - deep
Deceiver - mid
Kwan or other Shrimp imitation- mid
Dahlberg Diver surface

NORTHEAST Saltwater:
Clouser Minnow
Lefty’s Deceiver
Surf Candy
EP Fibers & Kinky Fiber flies to imitate Pnut Bunker
Bob’s Banger, Gartside Gurgler or Crease Fly

I could (probably) fish the entire season with just these 5 or 6 flies in 2 colors and 2 sizes. Do I? Heck no! I tie 8 million different flies in a gazillion colors and sizes to fit every possible situation imaginable and then what do I do…I revert back to these same 5 or 6 patterns in 2 different sizes and 2 different colors and fish them consistantly…ahhhh, ain’t life grand!!!

Among other things , you requested information about a 'grocery fly' which is used for stripers. This saltwater fly enjoys a good reputation among fly fishermen across the North East , from Maine to Sandy Hook when fishing for stripers.
The fly comes from its originators : Eldridge Brothers Fly Shop in Cape Neddick , Me.

and it is usually tied in a 4/0 hook as a pollock imitation. Further information may be obtained at :

I like anything that is chartrues and white or red and white, both with lots of flash.
