Up to now, all my tying has been for trout and warm water species. I finally decided to try my hand at some salmon flies. I decided to start with salmon dries since other than the hooks, I had all the materials at hand.
Here is a Royal Wulff:
I used a split wing. Is this the correct wing style or is a single wing better?
It was nice tying a fly on the bigger salmon hooks, no need to squint to see what was happening on the fly.
Alberto: Your first attempt looks pretty good to me-I’ve tied and fished these flies for over 30 years. If I may offer a tip or two,the Royal Wulff uses brown Bucktail(sometimes brown Moosehair also) for the tail. The wings might also be more upright by placing more thread wraps in front of the wing base.Keep tying you’ll improve with every fly you complete…Frank
It’s a tad more like a Hairwing Coachman (white tail). The forward facing wing is pretty common on salmon/steelhead dries. It helps make the fly “wake”.
Very nice tie!
Now, go catch some Atlantics.
