Sage SLT replacement

What replaces the Sage SLT model?

Somehow I thought I read there is a Z-LT model but I must be hallucinating.

I just searched this up…

were we misnaming the model???..ZLT vs ZXL…

Thanks JC…very informative…

ZXL is a little confusing to me…I tend to think of it as indicating XL replacement :?

Ducksterman,

Looks like I am the guilty one that started the bad naming convention for the SLT replacement. My bad!

I just bought a ZXL 9’ 4 wt. $675. Casts like a dream.

krausebb,

Tell us more. I went to test cast a few 4wts about 3 weeks ago, but my local shop sold out.

Is it fair to say …there was the LL series…then the SLT series…and now the ZXL series…each replacing the other…somehow I hadn’t thought of the SLT replacing the LL?

What about the XP and SP?

I talked to a Sage rep about the action of their new ZXL. He told me that the ZXL series is closer in action to the old LL series but not as fast as the med-fast action SLT series. Basically the action is in between the two but more towards the LL series which is moderate action. The blank of the ZXL is similar in color to the old LL series but much lighter since its a generation 5 graphite fly-rod. The XP series was a fast action rod and the SP was a more medium-fast action rod. The XP was replaced by the Z-axis series and TCR series rods. Just giving you what I’ve been told. Good-luck!

The old saying, “If ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” must not be known to the folks at Sage. According to everyone’s post here, the SLT was a very popular rod (sorry, I don’t own one) and now they have replaced it with something that is sort of an unknown entity. Seems like a job for (Sage) Marketing Man!! Why do companies do this??

Dr Bob :?

“Generally” they will replace a model after about five years.

Sage knows what they’re doing. They just improve on a rod series, and drop the line it replaces. What’s wrong with that? Nothing in my opinion. If they didn’t, the Sage rod booklet would look like the old Sears catalog.
BTW I haven’t seen any Pinto’s, Gremlins or Vega’s lately, have you?

That reminds me of a Sage ad in a magazine…They wrote a big long thing on the inside front page…But the thing in bold white letters stuck out was “[b]If it ain’t broke, Fix it anyway. Or How We Built A Better Fly Rod./b]”

I’d like to cast one of the new rods. I own an SLT and it’s an outstanding little rod. It’s a 7’6" 3wt that casts like a dream with either 3wt or when overlined to 4wt. It’s the perfect small stream rod for me. Like always your mileage may vary.

I do want to give one of the new ones a spin to see if it really is better. If it’s better than the SLT, I may part with some more money.
