HI
Has anyone used a Sage RPL 8wt with a sink tip. I’m looking for a rod that can handle a 250gr sink tip (30ft) to be used for steamers. OR other suggestions

I’ve used the Sage RPL 7 wt with a sink tip and had no problems at all. This happens to be my overall favorite Sage model and my go-to bass rod. Great rods!

I have a couple Sage RPL’s and the 8wt is my favorite in the lineup. It’s sweet, my go-to river smallmouth rod. I throw a floating line with mine but I would guess that it would throw a sink tip just as well.

Only RPL I have is the RPLXi model in 8 wgt

EDIT: Got to amend this post. I went and looked and the very first rod I ever built was a Sage-RPL-9ft- 5 wgt. Old brains get foggy…

I use a Teeny T250 with my 6wt RPL for shad; probably overloaded but it works well enough. 8wt should be no problem.

I have the 6# RPL and it is a great rod, it can handle a #7 full fast sinking line no problem at all, I should think the 8# will handle just about any line up to about 350 to 380 grain.

The 8wt RPL is my favorite rod for throwing a GPS floater or sink tip IV. The rod does tend to get overloaded at longer distances so line speed and shooting takes over in those circumstances. It is a comfortable rod to throw all day. I wish I had another one in case I break this one.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Sage still had spare blanks for your 8wt in case you had to return it. I’ve had to send my 6wt back in 3 times, the latest being in 2005, and they had no problem replacing the broken section.
