Does any one have an oppinion on the sage 1800 series reels? I am looking to purchase the 1830 and just wanting to know how they are holding up and how the drag system is?
Thanks
Jason

JL,
I have a Sage 1880 I use on salt. It’s an okay reel. Nothing fancy and not the lightest reel around but servicable and durable. Drag is a sealed (I think) one way clutch type. But I only use enough drag on any reel to keep from backlashing on stripping. The rest is palming. Any time a snook gets you to the reel, he is going about 95 and you don’t want a lot of drag on the reel at that point. I like it better than the Lamson I was using because it seems more durable - not that the Lamson has given me trouble - but I have had reports - especially about the little screws that hold the reel foot to the body.
I like my Ross evolution the best. Don’t know why. They make a nearly identical reel with less lightning holes for less money but I just like the evolution. And since it’s my money, I guess I don’t need a reason.
Godspeed,
Bob
I also have a Sage 1880 reel that I got as a part of a set when I bought a Fli 9 wt outfit. I like the reel except I have a bit of trouble with the drag staying set. It tends to get looser, which probably isn’t that serious for me since I use the outfit mainly for bass bugging with an occasional attempt, so far unsuccessful, to catch some pike. Other than that minor complaint the reel is a good one.
