I’ve got the 9’ 4wt 2pce for some trout pond fishing. I think it’s best in its class and a definite improvement over the DS2 series. More fast in the med-fast range, nice progressive taper, light, and tough.
I don’t baby my rods: it can chuck a sinking leader and zonker 60+ ft, haul in a 4lb rainbow and be bent into a C underneath your boat with only the handle above water. But it also loads well in the short range by using the tip and 1lb rainbows provide a nice bend to the rod.
I chose it over the St. Croix Legend Ultra and others in that price range. Compared to my Sage SLT and Loomis GLX, its not as smooth nor alive but then again its 1/2 the price.
I have the 590-4 and really like it. Here are a couple of previous threads on these rods.

I have heard from some anglers that really like the 8 and 9wts also.
Thanks for the input, I tried a search but must have missed those posts. looking at the 576-4 & 586-4.

Lets Go Mets
I won a brand new 590-4 on an EBAY auction. I love it. Last week I let my friend borrow it on a Spring Creek since he only owns a 6 weight. He loved it too and will be purchasing one soon as well.
Hehe, he said the rod casted like he had been practicing all week. I really don’t believe a rod can make you a better caster but this is a fun rod to cast. About the only thing I don’t like is the FUGLY finish and color, but I can get used to that.
I picked up a 9’ 4 piece 6wt. about two months ago and I’m extremely happy with it
And it’s affordable.

For what’s it’s worth, you might want to check out the Reddington CPS. As I am sure everyone knows, Sage purchased Reddington and this CPS is a fine rod for the price ($249).
“Dad can we go fishing?”
“Yes. Of course we can.”
Say yes, always say yes.
the fli is the upgrade of it’s ‘workhorse’ the discovery series.
I own a 590 fli and find it good value. when it comes down to it, the warrenty values of sage are a huge plus, and the medium / fast action isnt bad either.
I use mine on the smaller mountain streams here in southern new zealand, and have had no problems so far.

You might also give the Launch series a try. I picked up a 9’5wt 4 pc. Launch and really love it. At $190 or so it’s a super value and fits my casting stroke just about perfectly.
These are the idle thoughts that posses a man’s mind when he’s not able to fish.
I bought the FLi 590-4 off eBay and I use it more than my XP. The rod has a particular action that suits my cast better. The price is excellent so I’m not afraid to be rugged with it.
I think it is the best value of my rod collection. When I go casting, I grab my XP. When I go fishing, I grab the FLi.
