If your planning on tossing Bass sized bugs to atain these fish,Then I’d go with headstart…but I don’t recall headstart being available in lines lighter than 6wt…Humm now I’ll have to check…
Cabela’s only lists 5 6 7 8 wt’s

For the size of the flies you will be pitching, I would suggest a more heavily front loaded line, such as a Rio Accelerator or 3M XXD. This will help compensate the low fly line mass relative to the larger fly sizes.
Chavez,
Just revieved a new catalog from J Fisher,Never heard of em,But found the headstart in 4wt. and mine is now on it’s way for my 9 footer,Building an 8 ft. so my GPX will be dropping to that rod,I too use my 4wt for mostly bass,Large and small mouthed as well as carp.and the headstart is a shorter/heavier tip as I’ve tried Rio and several other brands of line…I’ll stick with SA Lines from here on out.
For all my fishing, and my orignal post stated 5 to 8wt’s “Cabela’s” … “J Fisher” carries 4wt Headstart as well,First I’ve seen it anywhere in that light a wt.

IMHO I think SA’s Headstart is a sleeper. By that I don’t think most people realize how good this line is. I checked SA’s webstie and the Headstart does come in a 4wt. So maybe you can have your local shop order you some if they don’t have it in stock.
I use it on my 5wt and fish primarily for bluegills with that rod. I think of it as a mini bass bug taper line.
Like you, I use the Headstart line on my 5 and 6 wt rods and it is great for most flies I throw with these rods. For my lighter weight rods like 4 and 3 wt, I have found I like the Cortland 444 Classic series of lines. This is their peach colored lines. I like the way they deliver a smaller fly as you would use on a lighter line weight rod. However, if you don’t plan on thowing too many small flies, the Headstart is a fine line.
I’d recommend the headstart, unless you would much rather have and khaki line than a neon yellow one.
I love the XXD, but wouldn’t recommend it for this situation. While the belly of that line is front loaded, its front taper is much longer than that of the headstart, and still longer than that of the GPX. The taper will have more to do with kicking over weighted buggers and poppers.
The XXD is my favorite line ever for long casts, long mends, and long roll/spey casting. I doubt that’s what you’ll be using the 8’ 4wt for.
Thanks y’all! I ended up ordering my Sage Launch 480 and the WF4F SA Headstart from [url=http://www.ezflyfish.com:14546]http://www.ezflyfish.com[/url:14546] (free shipping!) and it should be here Thursday afternoon! Can’t wait! Thanks again!
