RW's wet/dry Roscoe Invitational Swap

RW here, THIS SWAP IS CLOSED

I’ve put together an 8-man swap of the most popular dry/wet-fly combinations that hatch on Catskill streams. Participants will be those folks who attend, or have attended the annual Roscoe fish-in. Each person will tie 7 dries of the Catskill pattern he selects and its wet fly counterpart for a total of 7 pairs…14 flies.

Also we are tying one extra pair as I am going to have an entire set mounted and framed as a presentation to Des Lambe (owner of Reynolds House) for letting us folks that don’t stay there use his lounge/gameroom to tie every night during the fish-in. That means 8 pairs…16 flies in all. I’m giving this special swap a long lead time. Flies will be due me on January 31.

The following tyers are participating in the swap:

Allan Podell (tyeflies)- Quill Gordon (RECEIVED)
Andy Brasco - Dark Hendrickson (RECEIVED)
Robert Montouri (monty) - Light Hendrickson (RECEIVED)
Jason Schnur (feenom) - Red Quill (RECEIVED)
Mike Belloma (ny angler) - March Brown (RECEIVED)
Snipe - Grey Fox (RECEIVED)
lou t - Dark Cahill (RECEIVED)
Gerald Wolfe (RW)- Light Cahill (FINISHED)

Okay folks, we’re good to go.

More info to come…

This is gong to be a mounted presentation. I don’t want anyone who can’t tie Catskill Flies. If you’re funnin me okay, but if you’re not no way. Besides, are you coming to the fish-in or have you been? This swap has a few reqirements. This is not a beginners swap.

Okay, I was just talking to Allan and he said you were pulling my leg. Figures! He says you’ve been tying longer than him and me put together. I don’t know about that but okay, I’m putting you down for the Grey Fox. Hope you can make the fish-in for a couple days.

What gives with this swap RW? Why did you even bother to post it when you obviously already had your list of tiers that meet the requirments all picked out and on board?

As a means of joint communication and instant messaging to all participants. This is a special swap for Roscoe fish-in goers. If you’re not in the swap and you don’t understand what’s going on, why do you care enough to make me explain it. It’s still a swap between FAOL’rs and this is where it belongs.

Rw,Please don’t be offended. I did not understand the need to post if you had all participants and probably there e-mail addy’s as well. And you don’t owe me any explination, but that on will do just fine. Have a great day! sorry for asking!

No offense taken. This swap has two purposes…a regular swap between friends and a way to show our appreciation to Des for letting us use the Reynolds House lounge for tying, even though some of us don’t stay at his BB/motel during the fish-in. Not many folks would let us use this facility free for a week the last three years and I just thought it would be a nice gesture if some of us regulars at the fish-in recognized his generosity.

That’s really a nice thing to do. Pay it forward so to speak. Now I understand why you posted here. Thanks from one fellow FAOLer to another.

Hi folks,

Plenty of time to tie this swap after the busy holiday season, but should anyone decide to tie them sooner rather than later…my address is:

Gerald E. Wolfe
P. O. Box 757
So. Casco, Me. 04077

Please mail in a crushproof container(s), film cannisters, altoid tins, etc. Never mind return postage or self addressed envelope. I’ll take care of all that. All sets will be returned to each tyer in his own container in a padded mailing envelope to the return address on the original package.

This is going to be a great swap!

RW,
No,I wasn’t funnun’ with you. Most of the flies I tie are not strictly true to pattern. I’m ok with Catskill paterns…Just have to check with Allan on the “proper materials” etc. I’ll get them in on time and see you at Roscoe for a day or two at least.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to confuse the issue. The problem is that when I tried to find an early recipe for a Gray Fox, I found the following…

wing…dark gray (Mallard slips?)

Hackle…grizzly

Body…dark gray fox fur with silver tip

tail…dark gray fibers (from gray fox?)

I thought this must be wrong so I’m going to do a more contemporary tie so as not to start any controversy. I’ll tie up the old patern and try it out. Strange how patterns can metamorphose over the years.

snipe:
I’m tying a Dark Cahill and I can find old recipes that give the following variants:
Tail: Brown Hackle, Ginger Hackle, Wood Duck, Mandrin, or Dyed Mallard

beard: Brown Hackle, Dark Ginger hackle or Wood Duck

Wing: Wood Duck, Mallard, Mandrin, or Dyed Mallard

Seems there’s a question to what the “original” recipe is. (in my mind anyway)

Hi folks, RW here

Received Allan’s flies and what a fine job he did. I will update the first post in this thread with those I have received the flies from as I get them.

Hi folks, RW here

Well, I have two sets in-house and lou t told me last night on the chat that his were boxed and ready to mail. My dries are done and I’m working on the wets now. I just got a beautiful framed shadow-box under glass at a craft store couple days ago and am looking forward to making up this display for Des at the coming Roscoe fish-in. Just thought I’d update all of you.
