Ruoff's Signal Thorax Emerger SBS

Found this on Hans Weilenmann’s site. Tied the wing a bit fuller than the original to improve visibility (for me).

hook ? Dai Riki 320 #14
thread - Danville 6/0 brown
abdomen - Zelon dubbing hydropsyche
thorax - dubbing hot orange
hackle - dun CdC/partridge
wing - Congo Hair white

Part 1

mash barb, start thread at 2/3 mark; wrap to bend

dub abdomen to 2/3 mark

dub thorax to 80% mark

tie in a hank of CH (as thick or thin as you desire; my sight’s not as good as Mr. Ruoff’s) over the eye

create thread loop

insert CdC in clip (my stock is low-grade so I used 2 feathers), trim butts, insert in loop, spin

Part 2

tie in partridge by tip

wrap CDC; tie off/trim

wrap partridge; tie off/trim

stand wing up, set angle with thread wraps, whip finish, SHHAN ( looks like another coat is needed)

trim wing

Scott

I really like the look and concept of this fly. It’s got a generic buggy-ness that many of Hans flies seem to have. And the white poly wing seems like it will add some much needed (at least for me) visibility. Going to have to give this a try and some combinations and sizes to match local hatches.

Thanks for finding and the excellent SBS.
