As a fly tier I’m always on the look out for anything I can use to tie flies. My daughter has these little rubber hair ties that come in a variety of colors. They make really nice segmented bodies. Does any one else use something like this? I haven’t fished any so wondered if there would be any cautions when it comes to using a material like that. Don’t want to tie a bunch of patterns up with them and have issues on the stream.
Do you have a pic? Real rubber bands tend to deteriorate over time (don’t we all?), but I’m guessing they’re made out of something else. Could make for some neat effects.

@1hook Here are some midges I’ve tied using girls’ hair ties. I haven’t seen any kind of deterioration yet. As long as you don’t keep them in a very warm/hot area, you should be fine. Below is a common carp that seemed to like it. Sorry if the pics are too big. Tight lines!
That’s exactly what they are rwar and they do tie up nicely. The deterioration was my main concern. Been tying some caddis pupa with them and they turn out nicely.

Cut them in half and tie on as legs Fishy Fishburne did this at SowBug this year.

They are not rubber some kind of synthetic plastic like material. Cut them into and stretch it to youthink it’s about to break. That will take most of the curl out ofit. I think they will last about as long as anyother type legs, maybe longer, under similar conditions.
