Rubber Hackle ??

I’m working on tying some micro jigs and found a nice pattern to work from, but it calls for “Rubber Hackle” for the legs. I’ve never come across, or heard of, “Rubber Hackle” before. Is this the same thing as silliy legs, rubber legs …etc ., ?? This is what the jig looks like

Thats what I used it for on my Yuk bugs.
It looks like legs to me. How they can call it hackle is beyond my comprehension.

I was pretty sure it was the same thing as rubber legs  Being new to tying I’ve noticed that a lot patterns I come across use so many terms in them that may mean something else, sort of a tyier’s slang, and as a newbie to tying it can be some what confusing.

There is a product out there called Rubber Hackle and it is not the rubber legs we see in the photo.

Montana Fly Co. sells some;

Never used it, most likely never will, but who knows, it may be decent stuff.

And, it comes from Ethiopian Rubber Chickens, which are very hard to raise, I’ve heard.

Flybinder,

Aren’t those the same folks who provide the naked rubber chickens to burlesque comedians? That may be where the rubber hackle comes from.

I have seen patterns tied with the “Montana Fly Co.” type of rubber hackle. My local Orvis shop has them from time to time. It looks like a cross between regular dubbing and mohair, but with VERY small strands of “rubber legs” in the mix. I haven’t fished it but it looks interesting. Best Regards…

I found the Montana Fly Co web site and they have a picture of the rubber legs … they look more like a dub mix then legs  Interesting combo.

No one raises them…it is where the rubber hits the road…it’s roadkill:rolleyes:

Legs are usually made of rubber or maybe silicone, etc. But hackle is feather fiber material unless it is synthetic hackle as far as I know. There is no such thing as rubber hackle legs as far as I know (unless a new material has come out) other than hackle legs but not rubber. I do know that rubber or silicone leg material can be wound like a hackle collar on some patterns but it is not hackle. Its just the wrong terminology here I think where it is meant to be rubber legs. The word hackle should not have been used as it is confusing.

To me, there can be rubber legs or hackle legs but not rubber hackle legs is the best way I can explain it.

There are some very popular patterns here in CO that use the rubber hackle from Montana Fly Co. It’s basically fine rubber legs woven into a wire dubbing loop. I tried making some myself on fine wire, and gave up in frustration!

The patterns I refer to are big wooley buggers, and they sure do look good in the water and work n the fish. Particularly big brown in the fall.

Tied this with some of it, there are so many possibilities!

Does anyone know where this rubber hackle can be purchased from??

That ‘micro jig’ in the first post looks suspiciously like the Cap Spider from earlier this week. It was just moved to a jig hook and added a tail.

I love the micro jigs though. The Crappie here think they are great!

Mike,

Just plain rubber leg material (sometimes called “rubber hackle”) is what you need. Should be able to find it in any fly shop, or online from vendors such
as Stone River Outfitters.

Mickalo,

Check with Montana Fly Company for a retailer or mail order place that carries their products. For rubber hackle, rubber or silicone legs aren’t the same thing and you won’t get the desired results with anything but the real thing.

Bass Pro carries a lot of Montana fly Co’s stuff…I like the look of their Centipede legs! Just have not gotten to order from BP for a while…Check them out.
