Rowley's Crystal Sedge Pupa SBS

Phil Rowley’s stillwater beast of sizeable proportions; a Travelling Sedge imitation.

hook - Dai Riki 280 #8
thread - Danville 6/0 olive
abdomen - Crystal Chenille olive/Arizona Synthetic Dubbing peacock
wing case - pheasant tail
thorax/head - Arizona Synthetic Dubbing peacock
wing pads - mottled turkey quill segment
hackle - Indian hen

Part 1

mash barb, start thread, tie in Crystal Chenille, wrap to point above barb

create a dubbing loop, wax it, insert dubbing, twist and brush out

twist together with the Crystal Chenille

wrap to 2/3 mark; tie off/trim

tie in some pheasant tail fibers

Part 2

dub thread/dub thorax (lost that last shot; use your imagination)

coat turkey quill segment (about 1/4" wide for a hook this size) with vinyl cement; tie in/trim

tie in hackle by tip; wrap, tie off/trim

stroke fibers down and cover with thread wraps

pull wingcase forward; tie off/trim

Part 3

tie in antennae

dub head; tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Very nice looking pattern Scott. I especially like your method of twisting the dubbing and the chenille together to add some flash and movement to the body. Beautiful job of showing each step so clearly. Thanks for taking the time to make these and share them with us. It is very much appreciated.

Rowley made the abdomen on his out of a Crystal Chenille dubbing loop with the dubbing inserted. I tried that but it seemed to come out too thick (maybe my chenille was too big?) so I went with a single strand of chenille twisted with the (looped) dubbing.
