What’s the difference between the Ross Rythm and the Ross Evolution reels? It looks like the drags are the same.

I may be off base - but from a little research of my own… a little bit of weight and more little bitty holes. I bought a Rythm - balanced the rod better. The other difference is $$.
It looks like the Evolution is 0.3 oz lighter for each reel and $39 to $55 more expensive. Other than that the specs appear to be identical.
It would be interesting to see if the drag system was any different at all. Even though the materials are the same, are the size of the disks different? It might be about more machining and reduced weight alone. The price difference isn’t that great and I wouldn’t be surprised.

I already have a Rythm and have been very well pleased. I got a new rod last week and am considering what to put on it. Given how much I like the Rythm on my other rod, that’s the one I think I’m going with.

I have them both and I think it’s mainly the price and weight. The Evolution has a lot more porting, in the spool, to lighten it up. IMHO, the Evolution is a little too light. It will balance out smaller, lighter rods but not any of the slightly heavier rods.
I believe they are they same, except for the holes/weight. The spools even fit on each other.
I have both of these as well. The rhythm can take a little bit better beating than the evolution. In my opinion the drags are exactly the same.
One thing the evolution has on the rhythm though is how freely the spool spins to pick up slack line faster. For instance if you have a fish on and you have 6-10 feet of line before you can get the fish on the reel you can slap the spool or hit the handle with your finger and the reel will spin very quickly and smoothly. One or two good slaps and 6-10 feet of line can be sucked into the reel in a flash. The rhythm doesn’t do that.
But… as I said the evolution isn’t as tough. Drop it a few times on a boat floor or concrete and you can easily warp the spool and it will loose it’s smoothness.
I have several Ross reels including an Evolution. I like all their American made reels. Don’t know much about the foreign stuff. If you are into light, pretty reels, buy the Evolution. It is nice. Buy the Rythm if you are not as fussy. Still a fine product.
Some people say balance is important. I don’t agree but that’s just me. Some say mass is important. I like light reels. But the reel weight is less than 25% of the felt inertia in a cast and a little change won’t be felt a lot. Break down is on my website if you are interested.
So just go and buy the one you like the best. There is no right or wrong answer.

I think the Rhythm may be the one for me. While I’m not tough on equipment, I don’t baby it either. It’s a tool for catching fish. The Rhythm on my Scott 5wt rod has a couple surface scratches after a year’s hard use. Haven’t dropped on concrete (yet).
In looking at the two, they appear to have the same drag and there’s only 1/2oz difference in the 1.5 size between the Evo and the Rhythm.
I’m not really sure if I could tell a 1/2oz difference when it’s on the rod.
It’s going to be put on a Winston 4wt Boron II-t which is a very light rod to start with.
Anyone have the copper color? I’m intrigued with that because it’s different than the black and gray reels I already own.

Just for fun, the Evolution has over 80 lightening holes compared to less than ten for a Rythm. This takes some time on an expensive N/C turret machine so it is going to cost more. From an engineering point of view, this does not necessarily mean weaker, depending on how the moment is applied and the location of the holes. Just some fun with holes for all you geeks out there.

Anyone have the copper color?
yes, i do. bought it for a nifty 4 wt Pennington bamboo. the color really went well with the rod. (is this important? of course not. that’s why i did it.) got another good 4 wt so i got a blue/gray spool so’s i could tell the DT from the WF lines.
thanks for the tip that the Rhythm and Evolution spools are interchangeable.
