With Scott showing us his great Carnage series of extended body flies, I started trying to remember another method I had seen on Gary Borger’s website a couple of years ago. I searched the site and finally found the name of the tier who has a YouTube channel with a number of tying videos - Roger Duckworth. Either Google his name or search for it on YouTube if you are not familiar with him. He also hackles his flies parachute style but with the hackle in between the extended body and the hook. It’s interesting.
Those are cool flies; the DIY Cat Puke/Tube Bodiz are pretty easy to make (if a bit messy) and the underbody hackling is a neat touch. The one issue I have (and it may be my inability) is keeping the bodies on top of the hook without a lot of thread wraps/Super Glue; had the same problem with the Carnage, Rogue, etc flies that were started on a needle and transfered to the hook. Using the mono core I skipped that step and created a solid, stable underbody that won’t twist and roll.
BTW, the original Carnage series (tied on the needle) was developed by Adam Trina, the guy who runs Montana Fly Company; looking back, it appears I never mentioned that.
I agree that the body rolling around on the hook without cinching it down tight with thread would cause me headaches, too (I have not attempted to tie these flies, yet). Watching his videos, it doesn’t seem to bother him that it rolls. He does super glue/lacquer the thread wraps pretty well at the end. Maybe applying some on the shank when first attaching the body would help. I don’t know. Like I said, I have not attempted these yet so I don’t know how infuriating it would be. I have made a few bodies with a drill and it is pretty easy.
