I currently fish with a St. Croix Legend Ultra 4wt 2 piece. I am going to give that rod to my son and upgrade. I wanted to stay near the action of the legend ultra and had picked out a G. Loomis Streamdance Metolious 5 wt. 4 piece rod. I recieved a gift certificate for my local fly shop making the cost near 260 dollars for the g loomis. I have since found a Sage XP 4 wt. two piece for 360 that is on closeout. What is the best deal, is the sage worth the extra money.
Cast each rod outside, blindfolded. Pick the rod you like. Yes, you can cast blindfolded. There is a difference in the rods. You will notice it easily.
I scanned the article. All I needed to see was,“Great rods are designed by great anglers.” That makes the argument rather circular to me unless they are designing them for us “not so or not yet great anglers.” The blindfold test looks good to me. Well maybe it feels good or sounds good.
I don’t think you’ll go wrong with either rod, but you owe it to yourself to test cast both many times. I have been going to my local fly shop for the past two months now test casting over and over the various makes and models of 6 wt rods.
Well, If they can’t cast, sure. The more he ‘can do’ with a rod will help. But, he needs/wants one for ‘the right now.’ So, pick the one that works best ‘now.’
