rod holder for yaks

Hello fellow yaksters!

I am looking to install a rod holder on my kayak, BUT!

I want one that will hold a fly ,and spinning rod.

Does the Scotty rod holder fill that order?

Does it hold the fly rod well enough , I would not want to loose one of my fly rods .

I use the fly rod, and the kids spinning equipement.

While looking them up on the net, neither mentionned that they did both jobs, there design was very different from one another.

Any help would be great,
Thanks
Chris

I have one of each…a Scotty fly rod holder, and a Scotty spinning/casting rod holder.
I’ll try to check them tonight, to see if either will hold the other rod type. I’ll get back to you, unless somebody beats me to it.

I like my Scotty on my pontoon. I feel secure with it.

Rick

I have both rod holders, I use the fly for both fly and spinning rods. I have never lost a rod out of the fly holders if you lock it in.

I also have both types of Scotty rod holders. I use the fly rod holders for both fly rods and spinning rods. I does very well on both and, when the strap is in place, holds them very secure, even in a rollover (which of course has never happened to me).

I experimented last night and discovered that both the Scotty fly rod holder AND the Scotty spinning/casting rod holder will each hold both spinning AND fly rods.

With the rubber strap in place the fly rod holder holds both types of gear well.

With the sliding ring locked in place on the spinning rod holder, you won’t lose your fly rod, since if a fish pulls the butt end out of the holder, the reel will catch on the sliding ring.

In summary, either rod hold CAN be used for both spinning & fly gear. If properly secured, you WILL NOT LOSE YOUR GEAR. Each type of holder has its advantages for the gear it was really designed for, however, and seems just a bit awkward when the other type is used.

THANKS!!!

I truly appreciate the info guys.

Thank you very much for taking the time to verify both types of rod holders for me.

I guess it will be off to the local outdoor sports store for me this weekend.

Happy and easy paddeling,
chris

Chris,
Thanks for asking, I was thinking about that too.

I have a Native Watercraft Ultimate 14.5 and I use no rod holders in front of me. I do have a milk crate with three rod holders.

My Heritage Redfish 12s each have a Scotty mount on the console. Most of the time, I don’t use them. They get in the way.

The Scottys will serve you well. They make a very nice product, and have a number of good mounting options.

To give you an idea of how good the Scotty fly rod holders are yesterday I went out fishing in my yak a 8 wt rod in one holder and a 4 wt in the other. Now the 4 wt is a has a rather soft action and was drooping a little toward the water, I had both rods in the horizontal position to keep them out of the way when casting, and I decided to have a little fun breaking through a rather large wake thrown up by a fishing boat. I started pedaling faster and got some speed up and as expected the bow of the boat knifed through the wake sending some water into my sot. As expected I got a little wet and all the water immediatly drained out but what I didn’t expect is the water pulled the tip of the 4 wt down into the water and I was now trolling with about half of the 4 wt submerged and the other half still above water. I quickly checked to see if the fly had come loose or something was caught on the rod and pulled it up. No harm done, the fly still in the keeper, no weeds on the rod and I still had my 4 wt. Whew! Thank goodness for a good rod holder Scotty

Sounds like you were having a BLAST!

Which model of rod holder were you using?

Fly rod, or spinning model?

Thanks for the info,
chris

I was using the fly rod model and yes, I did have a blast not only from that little adventure but also from all the fish I caught. I didn’t catch many large fish, only a few large crappie, one nice perch and a few nice bluegill, but from the numbers. This fish were hitting small bead head woolly buggers with abandon. In spots I caught one nearly every cast and sometimes without even casting but merely dragging the fly through the water. Many times the bluegills had the whole fly deep in their mouth. My forceps got a good workout.

I use the front bow cover on my Ultimate as a ‘rod holder’ for my fly rod and a milk crate with PVC tube for spinning rod.
