Rod "Fish-catching Mojo"

Do any of you have that particular rod that has a ton of fish-catching mojo?

much to my dismay, I think I have come to the conclusion that the cheapest, ugliest rod I own has, by far (and it’s not even close), the most & best fish-catching mojo of anything else I own…even my Steffen glass, or any of the bamboo rods…For pure, unadulterated fish catching ability, I just can’t seem to find anything that will beat the Wonderod.

here she is…

and here’s what she catches…

and…

life is still good…

Not rods, but I do have a couple of hats that seem to make a difference!

I think I know what you mean. I love to fish 2 handed rods and every year I will usually purchase a new one. And every year I go back to one of my oldest rods. It must be close to 14 years old and was broke once but it still catches the fish. The rod fits my hands and my cast like an old pair of boots will fit your feet. Once again this year I have purchased a new 2 hander. This time the new rod is close to the same type of rod as my much older mojo filled rod. When I take this new casting marvel out to see if I can catch a little mojo in it the old timer will not be to far from hand.

My son and I have two rods that we consider special.
One is a custom Winston LT and the other a sage 379 ll

Do they have Mojo, I’m not sure about that, but when we team up on the stream we sure have fun with these two wands.

Now as for the hats well their pure magic…

My Wonderod has a special beauty that can’t be upstaged by anything newer or fancier that I own. I think yours is just as beautiful!

As far as fish catching mojo goes, I personally think that old classic rods of any material, just have more of it because of the many travels they’ve taken, the experienced hands that have held them or passed them down to others, and lots more smiles they have brought to their various owners along the way.

Enjoy your magic stick!

Randy,

Fo sho. I fish a 6’3" 3wt White River Classic that I picked up a few months ago from a fellow FAOL member. That stick is like a magic wand…wave it and presto! It’s corralled its share of big native brookies in the Shenandoah NP, big wild rainbows and as of Sunday hung a few massive spring creek browns. You can bet that when I visit the banks of the Met come September I’ll bring that (and the 6wt TFO Deer Creek switch rod for bulls). I have utter confidence in both and wouldn’t hesitate to fish that little 3wt anywhere. Looking forward to fishing one special blue hole on the Upper D out your way real soon.

Mojo? Just use any rod I haven’t touched… I’ve got baaaad mojo!

I am lucky enough to have 2…

A Fenwick HMG 2 pc 4 wt was my go to rod…

now I find myself using my redington FSF 2 pc 3 weight…

But the rods are less important than the hat…it has ALLL of my mojo…if I ever lose that hat, I am done for.

yeah, there is the hat…

mine’s getting pretty crusty…but I’m afraid to wash it…

Steve, great shot of the rods and hats…

DON’T WASH IT!!! The crust is where the mojo has started self-replicating. It is actually creating more mojo. If you wash it…Oh GOD, I don’t want to even think about it…it gives me the shivering heeebie-jeeeebies. Wash your pants, wash your vest, wash your net if you have to, but for the love of Pete, don’t wash your hat, SOAP is a killer. The only approved “washing” is from falling in the stream.

in that case, I did happen to “wash” it a couple of outings ago.

Mine WAS an ORVIS Trident “TL” (the expensive model) 9’ 6" four piece Six weight.
I caught soooooo many fish, but also my BIGGEST. The 36" Hybrid was on it.
Sadly, it and a Battenkill LA plus line, not to mention the side window on our van, was stolen in our drive way one night.

The Helios is coming real close…but that thing had the GREEN Mojo.

I think mine might be my St Croix Avid w/IPC 9’ 6wt 4 pc. When warm water fishing I’ll grab it before any others. For trout it would be a St Croix Avid 9’ 4wt 2 pc. I really like that rod. I don’t know if it has to do with mo jo or just like to fish them more than the others.

I have a rod that I thought had all grades of mojo. It’s a Fenwick 6 wt. that I made myself. On the first cast I made with it, which was on my first trip to a Tennessee river, I caught a brown trout. As best I recall, I haven’t caught a thing with it since.

No, but I sure do need one!!!

Hmmmm… since I only got into this a year ago April… no rods with mojo.

Got some new ones with mo… some with jo… but… I mean, when I hear of mojo, I’m thinking an old, classic rod.

I need to buy an old rod with lotsa mojo!! Anyone???

I think the act of buying/selling a rod kills some of its mojo.

I wouldnt say any of my small stable of rods has actual “mojo”, but I do feel that one of my rods is cursed. I’ve got a St. Croix 9’ 5 wt that, from the time I hook up with a fish, I’ve got a better than 50/50 chance that it will throw the hook, break off, or tangle me up in brush before I land it. The first 20 fish or so that I had on the line with the rod all managed to avoid the net. Since, at the moment, its the heaviest rod I own, it’s what I use to throw streamers and bigger flies to bass and panfish. Even to this day, when i take it out to a pond, I’ll hook 6 to land 3. Dont really know what its deal is, but when I eventually get another 5wt to replace it, its getting hung up for good.

Whether due to some budding mojo, or simply average performance compared to that, my 7’-9" 3wt slays them pretty good, and even on a slow day usually manages at least one fish. Unlike its big brother, the little 3wt has about a 95% net rate for fish hooked.

I also am fortunate enough to have two with just the right mojo. The first one is an old Fenwick glass FF755 that throws a WF6F like there’s no tomorrow.

The other is a refurbished 2 piece 6’ 6weight boo stick. One fish after another while on it’s christening trip.

I’m still in need of a hat with mojo. Maybe a fedora.
