Hey all:
Is anyone familiar or has fished around Rockport, TX? I may be going for a couple of days next month and if I go, I will hit the saltwater. I have fished once down south in Brownsville so I have a vage idea how the dance goes. What should I expect this time of year, species available and all that stuff? Thanks in advance, Thomas.
Spring winds can be TOUGH so be prepared for it!!!
I would get a Top Spot map and look for some areas to drive up and wade in. If your schedule and budget allow, rent a kayak to greatly expand the areas you can fish. Clousers in natural and chartreuse should work fine for most sight fishing situations.
Winter has been unusually warm and dry, so things are moving a bit ahead of schedule. Reds will hit the flats to feed, then drop back into the cuts if a front moves through (we’ve had several, but they’ve been mild). Specks are in the cuts and trenches, looking for something big to eat, so bigger, heavier flies (bushy Clousers with lead eyes).
From Rockport, head north across the causeway and take first right to get to Goose Island State Park. Take the park road down as far as it will go, then wade under pier and into St. Charles Bay – especially good in the evenings, since the prevailing wind in the afternoon usually blows bait up into that side of the bay.
And yes, it will be windy.
Thanks for the info, guys. I have done some searches and have gotten some information on where and how. My brother is working at the old naval base in Corpus Cristi so I may stay a day extra or so and get some more fly fishing in. I will be going out with a guide most likely for the short time I am in Rockport and looking forward to fishing.
The last time I was at the Laguna Madre, it was in March and we had wind. It was a constant 40 mph all the time and the fishing was only fair. But, we stayed at a house that was on the Laguna in the middle of nowhere, about ten miles from shore off of P. Mansfield. During the evenings after dinner we would fish under the lights at the house for “trout”. Good trip.

Trucha, There is a place in Aransas Pass called Slowrides Kayak Shack, and it’s run by Dean and Jennifer Thomas, some great folks. Get with Dean and he can line you up with a kayak and point you in the right direction. If you go from Aransas Pass towards the Port Aransas ferry landing (Hwy 361), you come to an area on the left side of the road with mangroves called the Light House Lakes. Just across 361, you have the Brown & Root Flats. These two areas have some great paddling and can be full of redfish at times.
Also, if you take the ferry across to Port Aransas, you can go down the island and fish a spot called Shamrock Cove and Shamrock Island. All of these areas are on the local fish finder maps.

March and April can be windy, but there are some big sow trout and lot of redfish to be caught. Drop a line with your arrival is near and I’ll try to update the conditions.
