Has anyone have a problem with knots in Rio tippet? I have a spool of 4x which will not hald a davy knot or a 5 turn clinch knot. Also an improved clinch knot with less than 6 turns will also fail. MY first choice on small flies is the Davy knot or the clinch knot and I have no trouble with other tippet brands. I’m using mono.
I exclusively use Rio tippet and have not had any trouble and can never remember a knot coming undone. I primarily use the improve clinch knot and 5 turns or whatever I happen to rotate to…again, no problems.
I have used Rio for years, no problems. I would suggest either taking it back where you bought it or just plain chuck it in the trash and buy a new reel of tippet. It ain’t worth the worry or risk of not catching a decent fish.

I’ve been using their Powerflex for years without problems. Maybe it’s an old spool; I’d take it back.

Just curious whether the knots are slipping and breaking?
The knots are slipping.I know that Rio sells good products. This is a recently bought 100 yd guide spool. I have another spool of 30yd 4x Rio that i’ve had no problems with. I’m at aloss as to what’s wrong with it but I think I’ll take Sagefisher’s solution and toss it. At first I thought I was not tying my knots correctly,
Thanks for your replies.
Ditto that.
Here are the results of a tippet shootout. Some good info here:

I just don’t use Rio Mono (Nylon) or Fluorocarbon…period. I have used these three tippet materials for years without problems:

All of my tippet materials are kept inside my vest and not dangling off the outside, on a post or lanyard. I used Rio once, on the Madison, about 13 years ago…FAIL…
PT/TB
Have used Rio mono tippet for years as dry fly tippet without a problem. Of course, I never use the cinch nor Davy knot, so cannot speak to the merits of the combination.
Before tossing the tippet get someone else to tie a knot with it and test the result. If it still slips it is probably a problem with the tippet. If it doesn’t the problem may be in your knot tying.
I had two spools of 6x that would break too easily… switched to other brands but bought another spool of Rio when a nice Fly Store guy convinced…
To each their own i guess, Rio Power-flex is all i have use for years for trout fishing tippet. I use Seaguar Red Label fluro and Stren Magnathin mono for leaders and tippet for bass with good results. Any mono that has been on display too long in a store will not be worth a flip
