Anyone know of the background of the Rim Fly reel I purchased in the 90’s? The label says it was made in England. It’s the most simple reel there is, no drag adjustment and it appears very well made. I love the sound of the drag when the smallest of fish makes it “sing” on the run.
fritz is there a model numbr or any hint of a maker name, rim fly reels are a style of reel there are a lot of company who make and have made rim-fly reels in England.

Sold by Cortland. I have a couple that have been very durable. I use them for bass and panfish. Also sold as an Orvis Clearwater Reel during 90’s. A local shop is both a Cortland and Orvis dealer and still has a few of these . The parts on the Orvis and Cortland are interchangeable. Probably also sold under other labels and names. Made by British Fly Reel (BFR) I think, same company that made some models for Cortland, Orvis and others.
are those reels still being manufactured?
Not that I am aware of. I don’t recall seeing them in a catalog for several years now.
Rim Fly reels where indeed made by British Fly reels, a company that made reels for many other brands but is now I believe defunct.
They where very good simple reels and if you have one I would hang on to it.
All the best.
Mike.
I have a Cortland RimFly reel, it’s a model 384, and I think I bought it sometime in the 80’s, probably '87 or ‘88. It’s hardley ever been used, bought it when I bought a new Corland 9’ Rod rod but damaged the rod and sent it back to the factory (on their lifetime repair/replacement deal) and they replaced the rod with one that was made in China … the original had been made in the USA. So I sold the rod on ebay and bought a St.Croix for a replacement.
thank you for all of your reponses. I seem to recall buying the reels at Walmart. i intend to keep the reels for a long time. Does any one know how to boost the sound of the drag?
