There is a group of NW steelheaders that prefer to use click pawl reels for steelhead fishing. Now, steelhead have a tendency to run wildly thus the obsession some of us have for these fish. The ability to “palm” the rim of a click pawl reel is a necessity. Many that prefer a click pawl reel and palming over using a reel with a drag system will say they have more control over the fish. Palming gives the angler infinite control on just how much pressure to apply and split second timing on when to apply more or less pressure.
Hi Kerry: Another thought provoking post. Thanks. I’m always open to new ideas. In the beginning as you are learning, you tend to think that is the best method because it works for you. There’s more than one way to accomplish an end. These palming posts sure are making me think.

I can add only one thing - KEEP YOUR THUMB OUT OF THE WAY!!!
There is nothing finer than getting your knuckle cracked with a reel handle when it’s below 30 degrees out. Pure pleasure!
