Rigging for pike

Jeremy:

Sounds like “deja vu all over again”! I had exactly the same experience with my son a couple of springs ago, but our score was 6 -2…TIM
(I hate to profile any fishing as competition, but it does help to illustrate the effectiveness of flies for pike c/f hardware and bait.)

Do any of you guys have any experience with using a double line by way of a bimini twist. I know the salties use it for almost everything but I hear no mentions of it for pike. This spring I have been playing with a double line of power pro (I can’t even cut that stuff with my nail clippers) but no luck on finding fish yet.

For the past 2 years, I’ve used Spiderwire Fusion line as a bite tipped. I have never(NEVER) had a break off, cut off, nothing. Even the smallies in the same lake don’t shy away from it. I use 50lb(20lb diameter) and it takes a knot great, even with a teflon coating. I inadvertantly hooked onto a dislodged swimming raft while trying to interest a pod of lurking smallies, but hooked the raft instead. I pulled it ashore with my deceiver firmly lodged in it’s siderail, without a stretch mark, fray, nothing. I’ll never go back to wire. I’d say what I really think of wire, but I’d rather not get banned as it IS a family oriented site. Maybe this will convince you as to bass not being shy on Spiderwire: Jamie

Mcmutt,
While being a tad skeptical (born of 50 years of pike fishing I guess) and always using wire (17# in this case) your post says nothing is absolute.

You have piqued my interest and I think I’m going to give this line a try. Common sense tells me not to but…you seem to have good luck. I’m willing to try.

I’m guessing I just might be able to run into someone someplace that will have a used spool with a few yards left on it, so I don’t have to buy 100 yds. Folk are usually standing around the shop so I"ll ask around.

Thanks for riling me up here. Never hurts to look around.

Edit…I can experiment a bit but would you mind sharing your preferred knots for attaching tippet to leader (Allbright??) and fly to tippet? (Non-slip loop??)

Thanks.

Jeremy.
