Probably stocking numbers has a lot to do with it. No weeds at all is not good for a LMB and BG pond, especially if it doesn’t have other structure. I think we have to find a balance. In Texas some stock at 10 per acre but I only go 2 or 3 at most per acre. I believe the goal should be “controlled” weeds and not “no” weeds.

I think your “2 to 3 per acre” is right. I forget what the State of Ohio recommends, but I do remember thinking it was excessive. I can tell you that the ponds I spoke of are AT LEAST 10 per acre, & they are literally barren other than some brush they have put in. As I told 1 of the owners, brush will help, but it does NOT replace weeds…there must be weed growth to sustain a viable fishery, IMHO.
