Since there was already an " Irresponsible" thread title I wasnt sure what to call this one.
Does that mean that St Croix and Temple Fork Outfitters are the best rods/blanks out there, and that Mustad hooks are the best out there just because they are all FAOL sponsors? It’s one thing to say you like his product and service Steve which I certainly respect, but your comment was a bit overdoing it don’t you think?
Doesn’t really matter anyway, any posts that the moderator (who happens to raise genetic hackle) doesnt agree with, will be deleted before sundown anyway.
What I thought was interesting was that the original poster asked ‘why’ it was getting hard to find genetic brown hackles, not asking ‘where’ to find them.
Most of the responses, though, were about ‘where’ he could find them. I’m pretty sure that if he contacted Denny, Denny could tell him ‘why’, whether or not the guy wanted to buy one or not.
As far as Parnelli’s post, I’ll pass on it’s merit.
Personally, I own a couple of Denny’s products and have found them to be of excellent quality. The feather stems are very fine and supple, and the barb count is also higher than that of many of the other capes/ saddles that I own. On top of excellent quality, Denny is just damned easy to work with. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that Conranch feathers are the best that there is out there, simply because I have yet to wrap every brand and grade of feather around a hook. I would say that Conranch provides excellent value and superior customer service. All of this is just my unsophisticated opinion, and will probably be ignored anyway.
There is however, another matter…
“Doesn’t really matter anyway, any posts that the moderator (who happens to raise genetic hackle) doesnt agree with, will be deleted before sundown anyway.”
I think that is a pretty sharp criticism of someone who I seriously doubt that you have had significant experience with. besides being rude and condescending, it calls into question the man’s honor and objectivity. You may not have agreed with parnelli’s posting, but I don’t see that as a reason to drag Denny into it. If this thread does get locked or deleted it will surely be because of the tone of your criticism and not just because it disagrees with a view that the Mod holds about his product. That note that was on the front page a while back about being civil applies to us all and is part of what makes this a great website.
While I admit that there was an involuntary tilt-of-the-head when I read the post mentioned…I would assume that it was made tongue-in-cheek. Just giving the benefit of the doubt. Don’t know for sure…and probably don’t care:^)
That being said…I feel that there are no 'bests" out there in hackle. There are some that have stronger attributes in some areas then others…but no all around bests. I just bought my 1st hackle off of Denny (through this forum)…and he was a great guy to work with. Also, the Cree JV Hen I purchesed was the “best” I have seen for what I bought it for. The best hen hackle I have ever bought? No. I have some that are better for winging. But for soft hackles and in place of some of the other common gamebirds when tying small? Absolutely. And thats what I bought it for:^)
You had me in agreement until this part of your post.
There have been plenty of times when mods have had criticism (this one was off base, targeting someone outside the original post) and have responded as a member, not a moderator, just as you and I would.
