There is an article…“Better Mayflies Made Simple”…in Winter 2009 p.53…that presented this.
As near as I can tell the u-shape in the middle of the pin is designed to help the vise in holding the pin…the circular shape allows you to maintain a tying thread separately …mount a doubled foam strip on the straight …much as you would on a straight needle and slip it off after segmenting…then the thread tag can be pulled and the body will curve much as an extended Mayfly body.
