Hi Brian,

According to Bruce Staples book Snake River Country Fies and Waters, quoting the book on page 61,“The Renegade appears to have been created in the 1930s by Taylor “Beartracks” Williams who at that time resided in Sun Valley are of Idaho…”

I agree with Al my reference is best flies for idaho by Gregg Thomas. On page 76 the same is stated and I quote" Created in the 1930’s by Taylor “Beartrack” Williams, who lived in Ketchum, Idaho, the renegade is a standard for high-mountain lake and mountain stream fly fishers across the West" It goes on to say Tied with a Fore and Aft-style hackles and a body of peacock herl, the Renegade matches no insect in particular, but is certainly “buggy” and fish destroy it This fly can be fished either dry or wet

Just two cents worth on this. I had a buddy (now deceased) who was a master of renegade fishing . The old boy almost exclusivly used that fly with devastating effect. The cool part? He fished #8’s. He always fished them dry. We thought he was nuts. 'Cept for one thing .He got fish , and very consistently.
He’s gone and I sure wish I had his knack with that (oh my gawd they look huge when held up near a #14) fly.
