I was going through some of my old leaders & found a couple of 4X 7.5’ taper leaders, knotless, that I’ve trimmed down about 8-10" over time and the rest of the leader is fine. I was going to tie on some new tippet ends to the leaders, using fluorocarbon tippet, is this ok to do or should one stick with mono tippet?
I haven’t had a problem with mono to fluorocarbon. However, you can always add a tippet ring which will provide some convienence in the future as well as separately the mono and fluoro connections.
Fluorocarbon is harder and denser than nylon. I have had the fluorocarbon cut through the nylon mono with a blood knot. I use a triple surgeons knot for tying nylon and fluorocarbon together.
Yea that’s what I use also. I’ll use blood knots, or double uni, when tying the butt & mid section together when making my own leaders but found it allot easier using the surgeon knot especially with the smaller dia., tippets.
All of my tippet to leader connections are tied with a triple surgeons knot. Great knot for that purpose. I use an Orvis Cinch brass knot tying tool, Cabela’s also sells one, great for that knot.
I’m with Silver Creek: I’ve had a tough time finding the right joint for nylon to fluoro. Tried the blood, surgeon’s, loop-to-loop, etc. Tried the rings, which seemed like the ideal solution since the two materials never touched, but had several rings open up on me. I think for stream fish they would work, but on big lake rainbows & browns I quit using them.
Finally settled on the Orvis Tippet Knot (Google it). I tie 2X leaders to 4X fluoro and never have a problem. It’s a tricky knot to tie with clumsy fingers (I made a little tool out of a paper clip that helps), but easy to get it right and no pulling on the tag ends is required. When that knot breaks on me, I know it’s time to 86 the leader and spring for a new one.
