Reels for 0-wt. and 1-wt. rods

Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places, but I can’t find any reels that are specifically made for super-lightweight 1-wt. and 0-wt. fly rods.

The reel that I put on my 1-wt. rod, it’s a good reel but feels unnaturally heavy in my hand because there isn’t enough rod mass out front for proper counterbalance.

It seems strange that these superlight rods would be getting built and marketed to the fishing public without there being a number of “matching” reels manufactured to fit them. But again, maybe there actually are some #0 and #1 reels and I’m just not finding them.

Could someone please recommend a solution or two that I can investigate?

Sounds like you are looking for current production 1wt reels:

You might want to look at the Bass Pro Shop White River Classic Ultralight. I don’t know if it is small as you want (it’s 2 1/2 inches and 2.2 oz.), but I bought one last year for a 6’ 2-weight and it works fine. It’s not powerful by any stretch, but I don’t suppose you need or want one for a 0 or 1 weight anyway.

Ross Colorado 0 or Dannielson “Midge”

Many thanks, guys.

I wouldn’t have asked, but…

Well, and I’m kinda embarassed to admit this, but there’s a Sage 7’10" 0-weight rod that keeps whispering my name?

Joe

“Better small than not at all.”

Like Joe said, the BP White River Ultralight classic is a decent little reel. Very small and lightweight. Although it has no drag.

I have one and like it. Even with no drag…it’s a fun little reel. Not too expensive, either.

I use an Orvis CFO I on my 1-weight.

Joe

I would think a Pfleuger 1492 or an LLBean Quest might work. If you get too small of a reel then you might have the problem with your ling taking a set because the spool is smaller. I had a Fin Nor lite on my 3wt and sold it because of that reason. Another reel that comes to mind is an Orvis BBSII.

check out the Avon and the Magnesium. I am using the Magnesium on my Sage SLT 1 wt. I will probably have that rod and reel cremated with me.

I’ll second the Danielsson Midge suggestion~an awesome and beautiful reel.

Bit by bit as I find time, I’m looking at each one of the reels y’all have suggested. Thanks again, guys: THIS is more like it!

J. Austin Forbes makes great light reels for smaller wt rods.

I have two of the Forbes Magnesium and love them. One on my Sage SLT 1 wt and the other on my Dan Craft 7 ft 2 wt. Great little reel that only weighs 2.2oz yet holds all the line and backing that you could ever need on a small light rod.

Joe:

Sage makes a reel - the 3100 - that is very light and will match the Sage 0 wt very nicely.

Go ahead and buy both. You have my permission. I will not tell your wife.

I’m with JohnB . . . go for the Ross Colorado 0. Inexpensive and very lightweight. Balances very nice with the tiny rods.

Joe

I also use an Orvis CFO 1 on my 1 and 2 wts.A very sweet reel.
Best,
Steve

I like the [url=http://www.loopusa.com/Orignaltechnical.html:5ecf1]Danielsson Traditionals[/url:5ecf1], so I would second JohnB’s recommendation of the Midge.
