No Joni, I haven’t but have dealt with him on something else …good guy…he has a website and blog you could google up.
He has a Reel Making Forum at

His website is at

I haven’t tried it yet, but have certainly been interested.
I have been thinking about it. I am building my own Bamboo (with bought blank though) and I just though that these reels looked the part and would be cool, homemade rod, reel, leader, flies…
… line … ??

A little tuff on that end unless using a Tenkara, but then wouldn’t need the reel…LOL
Using the furling engine and instructions for horsehair on that site, I see no reason you couldn’t make your own line.
Fly Goddess,
Thanks for the link. I have a boo or two that those reels would be wonderful for!
Best regards, Dave S.
Hi Flygoddess;
What bamboo rod are you building??
Wayneb
It is an 7’ 5 wt. on a Payne taper 98.
Hi Flyg0ddess;
Sounds like a good one, pretty fast. You’ll have to let us know how it turns out.
I’m making a 7’ 4wt 2pc based on a SirD taper in March, I’ll be making the blank too! This will be my first bamboo project.

I am more interested in your project. I can’t imagine splitting, plaining, gluing, dying and sanding…please stay in touch on this. Where are you getting the cane? Tonkin?
Hi Flygoddess;
I’m working with a builder, he already has the Tonkin cane and is going to take me through each step. I visited him last year at the SowBug roundup in Mountain Home Arkansas, saw his bamboo rod work and knew I had to try making one myself if the opportunity ever came up. I showed enough interest that he agreed to teach me how.
I know it will be a lot of work but think it will be well worth it. Who knows, one rod may lead to many others.
I plan on creating a photo essay and perhaps a blog of my experience. If your interested I can show you my work.

Hi Fly Goddess! Have you heard from anhyone that has built and used one of these reels? It seems the original topic has gone astray.
Bruce
I’ve purchased and built both the kit with raw materials and also one of the Authors newer kit form reels. The book is certainly worth a read even if you dont intend to build a reel. The instructions are very easy to follow and with a few standard home workshop tools you should be able to build up a 3-4 weight reel in about 15 hours + or - . I found the project both challenging and rewarding, the reels are quite usable and look great on bamboo rods. These reels dont have an adjustable drag as such but do have a washer system that give enough resistance to avoid over runs when stripping line off the reel. If you are not real confident in your hand skills I would suggest purchasing the kit which is available in various stages of completion and finish requirements. you would probably need to set aside about 5 hours to complete and polish one of these kits. The beauty of these is they really dont need a High degree of polishing to look great I actually prefer the “unpolished” look and Patina of these reels.
I have no affiliation with the author I just found this a very worthwhile project, which I feel will lead to more experimentation in reel making. I was really surprised when I looked into reel smithing that there really is very little information available anywhere about this lost art try googling reel smithing and see what I mean!
The Payne No. 98 taper is for a 7’ two piece at approx. 2 3/4 oz.
Did the maker somehow modify the taper?
I would be most interested as to how he did that.
You are right…typo I meant 7. Fat fingers, thanks
You are welcome.
