I’d like to know if anyone has had experience with this American Tackle reel seat on the link below. I’m building a 2-piece, 9’, 3/4wt. with a .400 butt. Just wondering if anyone has used these and what you think of them. I figure it would be a nice, light seat, with the graphite insert.
Thanks
I use a lot of the the PacBay A7. That is the hardware most of my reel seats are based on. The American Tackle A7 would be much better than the A8 but I like the American Tackle UL3 for that size rod, too.
Hi Guys. I thought since my rod butt size (.400) and the I.D. of the reel seat (.40") it would fit my rod. I guess I’m showing my inexperience with these reel seats. Are you saying that it’s too large or too heavy?
Bruce
Too large. The inner diameter is not the important dimension here. The hood is almost as large as the end of the grip which would make it very difficult to inset. It is also too heavy for a 3/4 in my opinion. That would be a good seat for an 8w+.
I used that seat on a 6 wt I build on an IM6 blank from Jann’s. I turned the handle from glued up rings and inset the seat with a 3/4" sanding drum on a dremel to ream out the mortise in the cork. The handle shape is not as graceful but I turned it to fit my hand.
Incidentally this was my second rod built. The first a was a 4wt kit and they both catch fish, that all that matters to me.
