reel idea that doesnt break the bank

i recently bought a lamiglas fiberglass rod from a board member that has a very retro look to it, like a bamboo rod. (4 wt)

i’m looking for a reel that would compliment this rod, sorta retro looking also.

but the price cant break the bank!

i am not crazy about pflueger medalist reels

what say you?

You might want to pick up a Heddon Daisy Model 300.
Japanese clone of the Hardy Featherweight.
Usually avilable in the $35.00 to $50.00 range. Good reel for the money and looks good on a bamboo-like fiberglass rod.

Another in the same price range…Ocean City Model 76.

Another…J.W. Young and Sons 3" Beaudex.
In the $50.00 to $60.00 range up to around $125.00, depending on condition.

I don’t know if this is retro enough, but the Orvis Battenkill has worked well for me. If you ever need it, it does have a decent drag. http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=0385&dir_id=758&group_id=768&cat_id=7628&subcat_id=7645

If you really want to go retro…Meisselbach 631 Rainbow…around $50.00 for a good one.
I’ve owned and fished all of these reels. They are fine reels for the money and have a lot more character
than any of the spoked wheel large arbor reels so prevalent today. This is just my opinion.

I know this is not what you are looking for, but Orvis has their Battenkill Mid Arbors on sale right now, plus you get a free fly line of you choice or an extra spool. I just picked up a reel for a 3wt for $99 including an Orvis Wonderline Trout line.

well, i found one

KAboom you beat me to it! I have to agree with you Norm…would hav ebeen my 1st choice as well. Nice Reels!

Norman: what kind of reel is that?

Great choice Norman…I love mine!

My father built me one of the Lami 4wts in 1973
I fish it with a Airex Ablette like this one

Make one! http://www.reelsmithing.com/Welcome.html This guy has a kit and pattern for a very nice reel. Simple power tools only.

Dunfly, I just purchased a Battenkill Mid Arbor V with a 9wt Salmon/Trout line. It is a very good yet simple reel. (Steelhead in the fall!) Excellent recommendation.
