I will finally be finnishing a bamboo rod I have started.I have built a 7’-2" 4/5 wgt. I am now trying do decide on a reel for the rod. What I have on hand are a Orivis CFO III, Orivis Batenkill 5/6,and a Tioga LA5.these will probably all work fine. I was thinking of some thing more classic looking. I don’t want to spend to much, say under $300.00. any sugjestion would be great.
… for a classic reel to put on your bamboo rod, Carl, but I do want to extend greetings and a welcome from Western Montana.
No doubt you will get some interesting recommendations within the price point you mentioned. Hope you find one that suits you, and that you enjoy your time on the FAOL Bulletin Board.

I would use the CFO. Use the $300 for more rod parts.
By the way, welcome aboard. A great place you have found. Friendly folks always ready to help. Watch out for Ohiotuber and Jack Hise…the rest of us are OK…

the CFO, then the Tioga, then the Battenkill. If you want a new reel wow there are many. For many possibilities explore the classic fly rod forum and the classic reels on fiberglass fly rodders. The Meisselback-Catucci 372(a fine Bakelite reel) would look great on that rod. You want to see a photo of one on cane let me know. I might be convinced to sell one of mine. A Hardy Bougle MKVI as well (ya don’t have to pay big bucks either), Hardy LRH, SA System 5 or 6. Lots!
A Hardy LRH is in your price range; you can probably pick up a used Marquis for even less.
Get a nice vintage Pflueger- 1494, 1394 or 1594 (if you can ever find one), and spend the rest on a silk line.
I’m with Bob on this one.
that’s three votes for the LRH. hmmmm…
The Orvis CFO III is nice on bamboo, however if you want a more traditional looking reel try looking at a Bill Ballan. They sell for around $250.

Carl,
I matched my vintage (1941) 'boo with a vintage Medalist, but other suggestions also seem good.
BTW, don’t pay attention to Kaboom…Jack & I are as normal as, as, as, uh…
Welcome from one of the Ohio boys…if you get this way, give us a holler & bring along a whole bunch of Chicago hot dogs & Italian beef sandwiches!
Mikey
Mikey I’ll remember that . Do you like your dogswith the works and beefs with sweet and hot?
Carl,
I don’t know if any of the reels you have would go properly with the rod you’re building. I have some pretty nice reels here that I’d be happy to try out on your rod. Just send the rod out to me and I’ll see which one looks best.

I first agree with the Hardy, but CFO does look good on them.
