Reel color: Dark or light?

As far as reel color or anything else goes:[ul]*Most of my reels are black or gun metal gray but I do have a silver reel.

*All of my trout rods from bamboo to graphite have a shiny finish.

*Many of my bamboos are blond Leonards with un-blued “flashy” ferrules.

*99% of my fly lines are white.

*When fishing on State Game Lands I wear blaze orange and a red bandanna everywhere else.

  • I don’t have a rubber tip on my wading staff.

  • I wear metal stream cleats when needed.

*My whiskey flask when out, (which is often) has been known to reflect light!

*I often fish small streams with spooky fish.[/ul]End result, I catch fish no matter how bright, or shiny I may appear to the other fisherman. For some reason the fish don’t seem to mind.

As long as it works, and fits your rod well, who cares the color. Function is what you should be worrying about.

Thanks for the input all, quite a range of views and helpful info. Careful telling someone what to do or not to do or right/wrong on subjective matters.

I went ahead with black for looks and possibly to be less spooky. One of them was older, sitting in the shop for awhile, and had a more dull/matte finish.

Off topic, check out the new Orvis Battenkill Large Arbor Big Game reel. It wasn’t my pick ahead of time, but after seeing it in person and playing with it while trying rods, one came home. Very sweet reel, was my easiest decision of the day.
