Karli-RaeI have not got to tie anything yet since it just came, but got to say I think it’s going to be better in the water than the wigs I bought. I will say of the wigs I got the Don King one is going to be good I think. Craft Fur’s only tow color stuff is the black going to silver or white and this Don King Wig is a lot like that. I have caught fish/crappie on that stuff tied on a black jig head with a bit of silver flash, like flashabou.
Your red stuff seems much less stiff than the wig hair and I sure would like to know if any other colors of that are sold at some store. Anyone know?
Skip,
I don’t know if you have kids? I do, and I have “confiscated” some of their stuffed animal toys they are no longer interested in. There are quite a few colors of the Kraft Fur used in some of these, and some of it seems even better (longer and fuller) than the stuff I get from fly-tying material sources!
Now I often find myself wandering down the stuffed animal toy aisles at various department stores, to look for new fly-tying material.
Oh…and I guess another good place to look for CHEAP stuffed animals would be at Garage Sales!
I have bought craft fur from the local hobby shop and the local fly shop. Hobby shop stuff is ok for smaller flies. The fly shop stuff, although more expensive, is longer (Hareline extra select) by 1-2" and better selection of colors. The hobby shop stuff worked well for Clousers in trout sizes. Also makes good dubbing brushes.
I have absolutely no connection to these guys, but I find they do have some nice synthetic materials that are very reasonably priced (i.e. a buck or two a hank) -
