Ray Charles.

Ray Charles is the name of what looks to be an interesting fly. I was browsing Han’s site and found a picture of it. There is also an article about the fly here on FAOL. I got kinda carried away and tied about 50 of them using various colors of Ostrich herl. My question to you warm water guys is: How to you think this fly will perform on panfish? I think it should produce well.

Thanks - Tim Anderson

Sure, Tim, it should work fine . Instead of tying all those different colors and sizes though, why not just dip net your local waters or ask the local bait and tackle guy what size and color scuds to use? I did the latter rather than dip net some but I did scour the banks and edges of the lakes and canals to find the right size and color damselfly and dragonfly nymphs. Matching the naturals have been my best bet .

Robert: Quess the reason I tied them was because I sit around tying flies like other people sit around watching TV. I have about 13 boxes of flies with enough to last a couple of hundred years. I just enjoy tying.

Hi Tim,

Let me just say, the fly performs very
well on warm water panfish. I have fished
it since the initial pattern appeared on
FAOL. It makes a quick and easy scud
pattern for folks with two left thumbs.G
Very effective for me. Warm regards, Jim

I haven’t used scuds enough to make an accurate judgement of their effectiveness, but I would think the ostrich herl would have an advantage over hair legged scud patterns when fishing stillwater. Flies usually seem more appealing to fish when they have some movement in them. Unfortunately that movement is hard to get when fishing flies slowly. The ostrich herl should help.

A.C. Has a too simple Ray Charles in his portion of the archives …Great pattern…anbd a fun tye…

Jim H. Thanks for your response. I do believe they will work.

Bill - you are right they are a fun tie. I probably would have cranked out more but I only had four different colors of ostrich.

I would hate to see you overloaded with all those flies so you can send me some anytime, Tim .

OK - Robert and ???.

To the 1st 6 who send me their address I will send them 4 size 12 Ray Charles, 4 Aunt Lydia Bluegill Flies (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v610/ … illFly.jpg) and 4 ant type flies tied with pretty punch yarn. All flies will be the same pattern but tied with different colored bodies. All flies have the barbs bent down.

Aunt Lydia’s Bluegill Fly:

Fellers and Gals, I’d take Panman up on his offer if I were you. He has helped my son and I(FisherKid93) plenty over the years. His flies are great and very innovative.
They catch fish!!!

That didn’t take long. The give away is full. I will package them shortly and get them in the mail.

Tim

Wow, thanks for the flies, panman. I can’t wait to try them, and I’ll let you know what happens. Please be patient, though, for we won’t have open water for another two months or so. JGW
