Anyone use these Tube Bodiz by Rainy’s?
Haven’t fished yet, but think they may work well.
Tried them a while ago, and did not care for them. One can get the same effect with a needle, dubbing, microfibbets, and thread, if one needed to. One suggestion is if you are going to use them, you might use a short wide gaped hook instead of a conventional one.
I do like extended bodies for large duns like the various drakes, but haven’t tried the Tube Bodiz.
For large flies, I like foam extended bodies tied Furimsky style (see http://www.charliesflyboxinc.com/flybox/detail.cfm).
I’ve also tried Furled Extended Bodies for large drakes. It was John Scott (who used to be on this board regularly) who get me interested in the “FEB” approach. They are quick and easy to make (although I could never quite get the hang of incorporating tails into the extended body). See his FOTW at http://www.flyanglersonline.com/fotw/2012/fotw20120618.php as an example.
John,
Thanks. Quite familiar with the twisted material extended bodies. It was very popular for stonefly and hopper patterns. Have not found it useful in the smaller patterns…16-18 though. This stuff seems to work well at that size. Plan to give it a test this summer.
Wish John still contributed here.
I remember John Scott tied some small FEB dries for BWOs. There’s probably a description somewhere on here.
I always found extended bodies not worthwhile for small flies. To match the body length of the natural, you need a really short shank length. Its hard to find the right hook and / or you end up with a really small hook gap and poor hooking.
I like the tube bodiz OK for larger patterns, but the BWO version they offer is way too big for most baetis flavors that I have seen. I tried cutting it short, but it was still a bit thick. i think FEB is a good option for even tiny fall BWO. I use a mix of olive, dun and brown EP fibers. The trick is to use a very small bunch, so you wind up with a very slender body. Tied to a small scud hook with a poly post and a few turns of hackle makes a very convincing BWO parachute. I also like it with a small clump of snowshoe for a wing. They can be tied very small and slender, and float well. A standard light wire scud hook is good and the Tiemco 212 is similar shape with amazingly light wire
