This one goes in the tailwater box. Since the standard pheasant tail tail seems to disappear on all of mine as soon as I put them in the water, I decided to use something a bit more durable. Weight is optional; either a few wraps of non-tox under the thorax or a bead.
hook - WFC Model 11 #14
thread - Uni 8/0 fire orange
tail - mottled hen
abdomen - medium tinsel pearl
thorax - Wapsi Sow-Scud rainbow
shoulder - hen dun
Scott,
I have given up on using pheasant tail for rainbow warrior tails as well. Usually use whatever brown hackle I have handy.
Thanks for posting all these great looking patterns,
Ted
I have had just the opposite experience, I developed a pattern and the original called for brahma hen saddle for a tail. I found that after about 8 fish the tail would disappear, I switched to pheasant tail fibers and was able to get 12 fish before the tail disappeared.
as a side note, I have not noticed any accelerated hackle decay when using the brahma hen for hackle on soft hackle patterns
Me, too, John. I never seem to have trouble with pheasant for tailing. I guess we’re lucky. I really got to dislike the brahma hen for tails because it seems too stiff. Just my opinion.
