Rain and fishing

I have finally been able to schedule a evening fishing. It is in a pond but I cannot go out on it in a boat. (It is restricted). Unfortunately it is raining now and looks like it will be raining tonight. What is the consensus on fishing in the rain? Am I wasting my time when it is raining fishing from shore? I have read of some posts here where people go fishing in the rain but they seem to have been done by people who catch fish in asphalt if they have a mind to. I am not that proficient. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Hello Cardinal,

If you are comfortable doing so, by all
means go for it. I assure you the fish will
not be nearly as concerned with the rain as
you are. Obviously, a frog strangler would
make it a lot less pleasant, but in lighter
rains, I’ve had some great trips. Watch for
terresrials around the banks that might wash
into the pond. I assure you the fish will.
Good luck. Warm regards, Jim

Some of my better outings (so far) were in the rain.
Surface feedings (dry, emerger patterns) obviously not top choice (don’t rule 'em out). But as Jim notes, stick closer to shore with hoppers and ants.
If you see any activity - cast onto the shore, and retrieve into the water back to yourself (oh yeah, and hang on … ).

Its only water …

I’ve always had good luck fishing in the rain, i.e., one of those all day drizzle kind of rains. Whether fishing streams, rivers or ponds (small lakes, too), nymphs and streamers have always been a good choice. Last May I was fishing the Nantahala River in western North Carolina during a light, all day rain and I could do no wrong with a black nose dace!

My problem is I want to curl up in my little popup camper during one of those type rainy days and just read a book, doze off, read some more, doze some more, and just enjoy the rain coming down on the canvas bunk ends. However, there’s serious fish to be caught in that kind of rain!

I’m turning into such a wimp!

Fish don’t care about rain…they’re already wet.

Rain rules! Some of my best days have been had in the rain and drizzle! Cold and warm water.

Rain can be very productive for the angler. Any time the water’s surface is ‘broken’ by rain or even wind allows the fish to feel safer as they aren’t so visible from above. Go for it!

Rain is good…lightening is bad. Fish can really turn on just before and at the start of rain.

Just got done with YOUR rain. hehe I’m 100 miles east of you. Now its my rain but now its got some lectric stuff in it .Grafite rod+electrical storm=my butt in da house.

My only suggestion would be to make sure you leave the pointy red hat at home and use something with a bigger brim. It will do a much better job of keeping the rain from dripping down your face.

Good luck

I agree with Meadowlark. Rain can be good - but lightning and thunder tends to “put them down”.

Mother nature’s way of telling us we shouldn’t be out there waving a lightning rod around?
