Quigley's Film Critic SBS

A few changes from other versions I’ve seen. This fly has a pretty large wing and using it as the hackle post would create a bit of bulk (as well as a bit of a challenge to seat it properly when pulling over the thorax; using Uni-stretch as the post provides a stable base for wrapping the hackle and although it adds a step, simplifies the tying process. Lots of steps, but basically a pretty simple tie. Shown here as a (western) Green Drake; change colors to suit your needs.

hook - Dai Riki 135 #10
thread - MFC 8/0 dark olive
shuck - Zelon amber/mallard dyed brown
rib - Sexi-Floss brown/UTC wire amber small
abdomen/thorax - dubbing olive
wing - Congo Hair black
post - Uni-stretch black
hackle - grizzly dyed olive (Hacklestacker style)

Part 1

mash barb, start thread; tie in shuck, fold/wrap to bend, trim

measure (shank length) some mallard; tie in on either side of shuck, trim butts

tie in wire & Sexi-Floss

dub thread, dub tapered, robust abdomen to about halfway between hook point and eye

Part 2

rib with S-F; tie off/trim

and wire at leading edge of S-F

tie in a clump of CH, wrap to eye; trim butt

tie in loop of Uni-stretch, wrap to wing butt

tie in hackle

attach loop to gallows

Part 3

wrap hackle up & down post (length of thorax); tie off at base of post/trim

dub a prominent head

moisten fingers, sweep hackle fibers back

pull hackle forward over thorax, tie off at base of wing (trim off tag end of post)

pull wing up and back, set angle with thread wraps

half hitch x 2, SHHAN

trim wing (a bit longer than shank)

Very nice. It might be interesting to note that while Ned Long used the superfloss/gallows method for his ‘pullover’ method, Bob Quigley used a section of mono doubled over in a short loop for his ‘hackle-stackers’. By holding the loop with the off hand, it was possible to wrap the hackle without the gallows, and made smaller patterns easier to produce. Have seen the examples on the 'net where folks have used the wing for the post, but I’m unsure if that is how Quigley actually tied this pattern. Might just be a relic of Charlie Craven’s article on the subject, written after Bob had moved on.

Nice tie Scott
i sometimes use flexi floss looped over a finger on my off hand for the material to wrap hackle around for hackle stackers and it works fine

I noted in the DIY Gallows tool thread that I switched to this method of hackling because I never was able to tie very well, or quickly, looping the post material (mono, Sexi-floss, etc) over my finger; this way provides me a stable platform to wrap the hackle on.

Scott
