Quigley Sparkle Flag SBS

Another hackle stacker variation; mayfly emerger this time around. Tied here in PMD colors; change to suit the hatch. The integrated CH post/wing worked well, but give yourself enough room at the head (I crowded this one a little) as it’s a bit bulky.

hook - Dai Riki 125 #16
thread - UTC 70 hopper yellow
shuck - Congo Hair brown
abdomen - tying thread
hackle post/wing - Congo Hair cream
thorax - dubbing pale yellow
hackle - ginger

Part 1

mash barb; tie in shuck and wrap back to bend

build a slender body up to hook point

tie in CH wing/post; fold back

tie in hackle (shiny side out/cup side up), post up (thorax length)

sanity check (measure twice/cut once); adjust, if needed

wrap hackle down the post; tie off at base and trim tip

Part 2

dub thread/dub thorax

stroke hackle fibers back

pull hackle/post over thorax; tie down

pull post back and build up thread dam

trim post, find some picky fish

thread abdomen is nice and simple but feel free to play around - pheasant tail, biot, Krystal Flash, etc

Scott

Scott,

Do you use a gallows tool to keep the post straight while you wrap the hackle?

Alberto

Alberto,

I’ve jury-rigged one for a few of these ties but haven’t been thrilled with my handywork; back to the workbench. This one I just tied by hand.

Scott

Nice tie, Scott. Do you find it easier to wrap the hackle if you run the thread up the post first? I don’t think it’s necessary on a thread or mono post but I haven’t tried that on a foam or a fiber post.

Joe

Joe,

I’ve seen it done both ways and I’ve tried it both ways; can’t say one is easier than the other. I need to tie a few more to get a better feel for them

Regards,
Scott
