Question on reels

i have a 2WT i want to get a reel for but some of the reels i want are only rated for 3 WT lines and up. Is this a problem or doesn’t it really matteR?

Dear Ripper,

No, it really doesn’t matter unless the reel you are looking at is much heavier than the average 3 weight reel. For example, lets say that you are looking at two reels, one weighs 3 3/4 ounces and the other weighs 5 ounces. The heavier reel MAY feel a bit awkward on the 2 weight rod.

In all likelyhood a reel rated for a 3 weight line will work well on a 2 weight rod since the weight difference I wrote above is uncommon. You may need to put a few yards more backing on the reel to fill it but that’s about it.

I recommend try before buy - weight and balance might be as important to you as capacity ratings and drag performance. I bought a Cabela’s 2 wt. TFO combo with a CSR reel rated for 3/4 wt. My brother recently bought an Okuma Magnitude 3/4 wt. for his 2 wt. that is significantly lighter and cheaper than the CSR. I wish I had bought the rod separate now.

sponsor Global Dorber has a little 2/3/4 for $36.20

worth a look?

 On my 2wt. I’ve got an “Orvis Barstock Battenkill” Balences good and it works with my old worn out artharitic shoulders.
