Question on Available Boa Yarn Colors

Hi All,

I have found that Boa Yarn is far less available than it was a few years ago. In looking I have found “yarn bee” eyelash yarn that is very similar to Boa yarn, and also the Boa yarn, but only a few colors in the stores. However, I have seen some available on Ebay.

The question is “what color names do these suppliers call”: 1. medium dun, 2. brown, and 3. chartreuse?" Please advise, as I lack these colors and would like to buy them.

I may post this question on the fly tiers and main boards as well.

Thanks and regards,

Gandolf

Gandolf,

I think that yarns like many fashions come and go and it seems that the eyelash yarn craze has died down a bit. That being said, I have quite a lot of different eyelash yarn in several colors. I would be glad to see if there is any that would help you out. What size patterns do you use your yarn for? Bass, bream, trout???

I found some stuff called “Fun Fur” yarn at Wal-Mart a couple days back (Also had some in Michael’s Crafts). It looks a lot like what used to be sold as boa yarn etc. They didn’t have a lot of colors, but I got white, black, brown which have all proven to be good colors anyway.

hope this helps

Jeff

Gandolf,
I haven’t seen chartreuse yet, but I have seen a couple shades of yellow. One is by Mei Mei (no color name found on the label), and the other is by Yarn Bee (color is “Marigold”).

Except for black (“Raven”), is seems like almost all the Bernat colors are “mottled” colors, where there may be 3 colors/shades that fade into each other. Bernat has one called “Tweety Bird”, that has segments of yellow, orange, and sort of a pale red color.

For Dun colors, Bernat has a “Swan” color, a “Silver Fox” color, and a “Chincilla” color you might want to check out.

For Brown…Bernat has a golden brown color called “Sable”, and a darker brown called “Dark Mink”. There’s also “Soft Mink” and "Raccoon that have brown colors in them.

Hope that helps.

It appears Bernat no longer offers most of these yarns in the US. I have been able to find what I needed at the Sewn N Knit N Serge Outlet in Tornoto Canada

They have been very helpful in finding the out of date patterns and their service is excellant.

There are a few differences between boa yarn and fun fur.
Boa has shorter off shots of yarn, they are wider and more closely spaced.

Fun Fur has longer thinerr, almost thread like offshoots that are more widley spaced.

Both work for flies.

I found some boa on sale and picked up a bunch, but it has been hard to find inthe past year.

Hi Jim,

I tie primarily for panfish. Mostly bluegills and if I can find them crappie. Do you know if any brands have what amounts to medium dun, brown, or chartreuse, and if so what are the names of the color that the supplier puts on the package? The “Boa Yarn” stuff is about the right size for what I tie.

I have about 1/2 dozen colors already, and colors like the “Tweety Bird” that I have that have different color sections on the same yarn are OK, if a section of the correct color is available. Thus, I have several of the colors that I have looked for, but still lack perhaps 3 or 4.

I have already had some good answers, I think, on colors to look for. Hopefully others will show up.

I may want to take you up on the offer, and may be able to give you a color that you don’t have too.

Thanks and regards,

Gandolf

I was at JoAnn’s fabrics last night and picked up a roll of boa yarn in a color called Ostrich that is kind of a gray and black. It may serve for dunn.

Jeff

Why do the yarns have names instead of colors? That is just weird.

Must be some sort of “sales hook” for people that sew? Actually, its probably because many of these yarns are multiple colors on the same skein…so, instead of “Green-Brown-Gold”…they call it “Mallard”, for instance.

Hi Dave,

I think you are probably right. I worked in a couple of different lumber yards when young, and the paint color charts had names for each color. The ladies would come in, pick a paint color for the room they were painting, and then ask for the color by name. We would then ask to look at the color chip and look it up by the NUMBER. Thus I am thinking you are right, it is a marketing strategy for the sewers, ie: ladies.

Gandolf
