thanks for the good info everybody. a local canoe shop also recommended the wenonah fisherman. anyone familiar with that model?
Joe, I’ll certainly checkout Hillsdale. I just bought myself a Fish Cat pontoon and that sounds like a good place to try it out. All my fly fishing has been fron the bank so far.
I sold my Summersong and a flatwater racing kayak when I moved from Texas to Pennsylvania in 2000. I’ve been in Kansas for three years now and the job is easing a little and allowing some time for more leisure pursuits.
Canoing is in my blood and there will another one in the future. And it fits so well with fly fishing!
I haven’t paddled the Fisherman but I believe it’s too short for your needs. Yes, it’s light and yes, you would literally fit into it but it’s a little wide pig of a canoe that is too short for more than one person to fish in comfortably and it’s going to be a major pain on a windy lake. Or at least that’s what it looks like from the specs. Look at [url=http://www.wenonah.com:2f02e]www.wenonah.com[/url:2f02e] and look at the pictures of the various models and you’ll see just how wide it is for the length.
Hi everyone, enjoyed your article Joe.
Nice to see so much interest in canoes.
Just a thought on the Wenonah Kingfisher.
I have one and really like it. About the same as the Fisherman, but 16’ in length and about 60 lbs. My wife and I can spend the whole day in it and it will hold a ton of camping gear.
I’m sure its not the best solo boat, but it does very well if I distribute the load properly. I load it on top of our Honda Element and drive into pure bliss!
I can recommend this one.
Great to hear some personal info on the Kingfisher. I’ve got another canoe with the same characteristics/dimensions as the Kingfisher and I agree, it’s a great canoe for fishing with two people aboard. Maybe we should have a canoefish-in!
Sounds like a great idea Diane. Would be a great way to check out a variety of canoes and meet some fine folk as well.
Can I toss in my old Coleman Crawdad? It’s all I have (besides the Fish Cat 4 tube), but it’s a great pond boat. I can make it to Lawrence in 3 hrs!
