Question for Jim Hatch

Jim,

Saw your picture of your boat. Really like it. Is it stick steering, what make and model and do they still make it?

Warren

Hi Warren,

The boat was extremely popular here in the
South several decades ago. The original
was designed by Forest Woods of Bassmaster
fame in about 1969 if memory serves me. It
was soon copied by several other companies,
some of which appeared to have used the
original Forest Woods design to pull the
molds from. I believe there were at least
a half dozen companies building them at one
time. Eagle and Sport Fleet are the only
names that come to mind at present. Mine is
a 72 model Eagle. It had been in storage
for most of it’s life. I had to completely
rewood it due to dry rot, replacing the
transom and flooring. While at it, I
replaced all wiring and hardware, added an
airator to the live well, rod racks, new
carpet throughout, and sprayed the hull with
Jaguar green auto acrylic. The finished
boat is my pride and joy and I wouldn’t take
something pretty for it.G

As you mentioned, it is the stick steering
version. It’s narrow beam makes it quite
suitable for my swamp fishery and getting
in the tight stuff. I’ve gotten a lot of
comments on it. There are still quite a
few of them in service in the area and
every now and again I see one with a for
sale sign on it. Average price for boat,
motor, and trailer is usually in the 15 to
18 hundred range, but you can almost count
on it needing a bit of restoration.G

Warm regards, Jim

Jim,

Thanks for getting back to me. I love that boat!! I sure would like to get my hands on one for my own use. Do you know what size motor they are rated for and what size do you have on yours? Maybe, just maybe, one of these days, I will find one for my very own.

Thanks a lot and once again, nice boat!

Warren

Hey Warren,

There are still some to be had out there. I
recently have seen two for sale. I didn’t
check the prices as I didn’t need one, but
I sent a buddy who was interested a few days
later and they had both sold already. I’ll
keep my eyes open. If your travels should
bring you this way, I’d be happy to give you
some on the water experience with the boat.
Warm regards, Jim
