Well, its getting that time again. Got the ladder and the 9wt out and hit the lake. Had a great morning at the north nets, bringing in 11 in the slot size (19" to 24") and a 28 1/2" 8.5 lb hen that didn’t want to come in. Remember to check the weather, practise the double haul, and dress warm!! 
Welcome aboard beigefoot. I really need to get over to Pyramid some day with my stepladder and 9wt. too. You had a great day by the sound of it.

Well, hadanother good day on the ladder, except for the 10-15 mph north wind. Lots of waves and fish, once I got the line out farther than 2 feet. 12 were in the slot, but nothing bigger. I left once the feeling left my upper extremities They hit the black/chartreuse foam beetle and a monsterous wooly bugger I tied late at night when common sense was at its lowerst.
Glad you had a good time and got a bunch of Lahontans while you were ‘on the ladder’ beigefoot…but BRRRRRR ! Can’t wait for spring already.

Well, somebody has to ask what the heck is the “the Ladder” never head of that before
Is it used to get further out in the lake, maybe above the water to cast further?

Pyramid is very shallow, very far out.
Walk out as far as you can…put the ladder down and climb up…then cast like hell to get the fly out as far as you can to the fish. HUGE lahontan cutts (as you can see from the post) if you are tall enough to get the ladder out far enough LOL

lotsa people use beetles or buggers. green or purple seem to be good colors.
Now, I preface this with a disclaimer…I am far from an expert on Pyramid Lake…but I heard that the big cutts eat everything from tui chubs to a beatle that I see occasionally…And what appears to be a fresh water mollusk thats tiny…again, Me fireman, not biologist…(I can’t believe that I spelled that right!)…oh well, looking out at the blizzard conditions and 1.5 feet od snow right now, I doubt that I’ll get out to the lake anytime soon…guess I’ll try my new ott lite and tie some beetles and buggers up…<sigh>

'well, last year there was a 25+lb’er caught and released, and last month a 16+lb’er was caught, so I know there are some sizable ones there…see this link and look at the pics.
I read an article about Pyramid Lake years ago. I always wondered why people use step ladders to fish it. Do they not allow float tubes?

Yes they allow them and other peronal watercraft as well. The main problem with them is the almost ever present wind. On a nice day you will see lot’s of boats, tubes and pontoons but once the wind is up it’s too dangerous.
The ladders allow a little bit of elevation for the cast to go farther. There are long (semi) flats adjacent to a drop off that is the main target of most FFishers. Ive been on my ladder and seen fish between myself and the shore at times also.
Just so you know, the best two days ive had there were indicator midging in my toon.

My wife and I try and spend a couple of weeks a year during the spring at Pyramid. We just love it, although it can be a little rugged to fish at times. Last year we had beautiful weather most of the time and we got to use the pontoons quite a bit. We used our ladders in the mornings and evenings, but when the sun hit the water the fish would move out to the drop and you would have to get into the pontoon to be able to stay on top of them.
Midges and bobbers work great from the ladder or the tube, but don’t rule out the beetles or wooly worms. These old standards take alot of big fish every year.

Welcome aboard. I have only fished PL once in my life. I did not believe my friend when he told me to bring a ladder. I though he was joking for sure. The laugh was on me.
Last year we had pretty good luck tossing our flies from a lawn chair on the beach.:rolleyes: Old and lazy, I guess.

I use my pontoon sometimes, but the problem is that the best wind to cast with is also the kind of wind that will push you and your pontoon the 8 miles across the lake to Anaho Island. And generally, the tribal search and rescue have little humor when they have to cross that lake when the winds make it miserable…so My ladder(hopefully, I’ll be upgrading to the platform soon…)is the safest bet for now…
went out yesterday and got skunked north of Sutcliffe. Had lunch and considered my sorry plight, trying to decide to continue on with what I was sure to be an afternoon of frustration, or go home and get schooled by my 9 yr old on the xbox. So I took the route of solitary humiliation and kept fishing farther south. Once I found them, I brought in 7 nice cutts, the biggest came in at 26.5 inches and 7.5 lbs. So far the best bet seems to be south of Sutcliffe, so go out and have fun, with the disclaimer that the wind chill was 18 degrees with a 10 mph west wind, so dress warm…
