I am a reletively newcomer to the art of fly fishing for carp. I just learned how to tie the “Puke Fly” and was wondering if anyone could tell me how to correctly fish these. I would think that you would drift them like a nymph, but I’m uncertain. Please help! Thank you very much.
2nd the question, also I understand it was tied to represent a minnow that has been regurgitated from a bass, smallie I believe. Has anyone had success in non bass/panfish waters?
You mean like if this guy got an upset stomach?
Not my image, just ‘swiped’ from another board.

The first time I ever heard of the puke fly was when I visited here:

There should be some guidance somewhere on his webpage.
Eich and stephenjay;
id a little search and found this page: [url=http://www.about-flyfishing.com/library/weekly/aa101601d.htm:0aa39]http://www.about-flyfishing.com/library/weekly/aa101601d.htm[/url:0aa39] That lists the puke fly pattern. As for how to fish it, I would guess try fishing it like a dead or severely wounded baitfish.
I used that idea last year and tried some crease flies for Bass and Crappie to good success. Sure surprised a few of the plug throwing guys at the lake.

the art of fly fishing for carp
Nooooooooooooo When I read the words “art”, “carp” and “fly fishing” together I…I…er I need a breather…
Eich,
Do you get much drift in the waters you target carp in?
idabelangler,
Maybe comparing troutoids to carp is like comparing a pipe to a chaw. I can see why you seem reluctant about carp. The ones that grow in your country are big enough to EAT grass rods.

Yeah, I receive a fair amount of flack for being a carper, but hey it has advantages too. Most anglers will readily tell where they have seen carp feeding vs. where good trout/smallmouth spots are. There are a few “are you crazy” looks thrown my way. Really all that I ask is that you don’t pass judgement on me for fishing for carp until you’ve tried it with an open mind. It takes more stealth than with trout or with smallmouth. Haven’t fished for largemouth, so I can’t compare. A 5 pound carp will outfight a 5 pound smallmouth any day of the week. Granted there are no arobatics involved with a carp, but they sure give you a workout. Also the last time that I checked no one has ever landed a 20 pound smallmouth on the fly rod. Fishing should be fun, not contraversial or judgemental. Have fun! To me that is what it is all about. Take care everyone and tight lines to you all.

Eich,
Although I’ve never taken one of the fly rod, my son has and he tells me every now and then that he’s GOT to get me out on them.
He’s a very good fisherman and tells me how difficult they are. I know, I’ve caught many as a kid and have waded around where they swim in the last couple of seasons and can feel how spooky they get.
You’ve done well to take a few. I can just imagine he fight…
Jeremy.
I think a fella should fish however or for whatever they damn well want to…with in the law.
Spring fishing for carp has always been the easiest for me. I have had most success with prince nymph patterns fished shallow.
I now have a 9 wt 10’ I am hoping to test against some of the monsters we get up here in the mighty Red River.
If it’s good enough for Flip Pallot to do a show on… It’s good enough for me…
I’d think if it’s to represent a puked up,
IE Dead half digested forage fish…
Would not a “dead” drift deep bouncing near bottom.
Be the best way to go about getting the right action to the fly…?
Just my take on how to fish said fly…
“I’ve often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before” A.K.Best
Everyone wants to excel in this sport but at the same time we let traditionalists place restrictions on our tactics, methods, and ideas. I always assumed that fly fishing was a sport that allowed imagination, creation, adaptation, investigation, dedication, education, revelation? : Fox Statler, On Spinners (Not the dainty Dry Fly kind) “Spinner’d Minner Fly”

Pukefly?
That’s reaching. I am sorry, but that’s too far out for me. I’m already tying Glo-Bugs. That’s as far as I’m going to go! What’s gonna be next…the excrement fly??? Too much for me…
Semper Fi!
Bill, was your “dead drift” pun intentional?
Ed
Hey gigmaster;

How about a grass carp fly
Ed,
Yes it was!!! As left to drift, It would prove to be deadly!!!..
The puke fly if remember correctly was named by a 4 yr old who walked up as his dad was tying a new fly and said" that looks like puke"… thus the name. I would fish it like any other minnow or shad imitation
