I am so proud (not prideful) I could bust. My 5 year old grandaughter just tied her first fly by herself. She tied a pink panther. Her touch and understanding were scarry. I think I just lost my work station.
Hey Rook,
That’s fantastic!!!
Does she give lessons?

This site’s about sharing!
I think she might need a little more experience first. Her excitement was more than I can put into words.

When my grandson first started he got to trade one of his flies with Jim Hatch. I’ll pass on the tradition and if she would like to tie one for my grandson Garret he will tie one for her. He ties big flys like clousers, but it does not matter it will go into his collection. He is six now. Drop me an e-mail if you are interested. We need to encourage any little one that wants to participate in our madness.
Tell her we are so proud of her.

congratulations!!! i had a simular experience eight years ago when our only grandchild tied her first fly. i had her tie a second fly and told her i would keep the first one. a few months later at a sports show a fellow was selling oak and glass stands for flies. i bought one and framed her first one and gave it to her. it sits proudly on her family mantle over the fireplace.
thanks for sharing

Hi Rookie,
Thats great! By all means encourage her
to continue. Might be about time to
start looking for a short flyrod.G As
Harold said, I have swapped flies with his
grandson Garrett, and I think we were both
thrilled with the results.G His flies
live on my bench for my encouragement where as Grandpa Harolds have joined the masses in
my boxes. It’s amazing what kids can do
with a bit of encouragement and how much fun
it can be spending time with Grandpa.G
Warm regards, Jim
Tonight while Garret was tying his flys for Rookie’s little grand daughter his little sister started to beg to tie her first and then her second fly. We did a 1/0 white fly and then she proceeded to color it pink. The fly was just what grand pa needed for his collection. She is “ALMOST 5 PA PA” she is older in her own head than she is in real time. She is a lefty so we had a lot of problems with the process but she stuck to it and I helped by whip finishing. I was almost in tears the way she wanted to do what her brother was doing.
Thanks Rookie if not for you it might have been another year before she got involved.
Harold
Hey Harold,
Looks like you are going to have to expand your bench too. My grandaughters favorite color of fly is pink also. I hope your grandson won’t mind.
