Protecting a rod ??

Same question as on another board, but I know I’ll get more input here. …

We all know that leaving a reel or line in a car on a summer day can be a bit bad for the fly line and leader.

How about the rod ??

Inside a car, the temp can rapidly go well over 140 deg (f). Does this extreme temperature have an affect on the rod (blanks, wraps, cork …)

Thanx

Aren’t you in the Northland???

Duck,

Well, it does still get up into the 90’s on a few days in June etc.

The question was actually spawned from a member over on Dennis C’s Board and it got me thinking.

According to Fly Rod and Reel June 2005 page 16 the heat probably will not damage rods or reels without the fly line.

Jules

Don’t do that with bamboo rods!

Thanx all. I was just wondering.

Duck, … contrairy to popular belief, we DO get a real summer here (black flies, mosquitoes, horse and deer flies, noseeums …)

I’ve read elsewhere…I think rodbuilding.org…but not sure where or when…but it stated leaving a rod in a car is terrible on it. The heat will soften the epoxies and glues…and uh…can only imagine the results of that happening.

Jim

Jim,

That was my concern. I figure the blanks would be fine, but the wraps …

I am a beleaver that leaving rods in the car is a definate no-no and can shorten the life span of nice epoxy finishes. Properly done, epoxy finishes are extremely long lasting, more so on a custom built rod, but UV rays will destroy things faster than we think. I would honestly advise to take good care of your equipment. Proper handling and storage will give you a lifetime of use with your rods.
